NEW YORK – Fordham's Ryan Remo and Jimmy Murphy held Columbia to just five hits to come away with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops the Lions to 10-22 on the season.
The Rams (20-19) put two on the board, all with two outs, in the top of the first inning off starting pitcher Lucas Hall. Back-to-back walks set up a Mark Donadio double over the head of Kyle Bartelman in rightfield to bring in both runners.
Columbia put runners on base in each of the first three frames, but could not scratch out a run to pull closer.
In the top of the third, Jason Lundy led the inning off with a single, stole second and third, and came in on a sacrifice fly by Ryan McNally. McNally recorded a solo homer in his next at bat, his eighth of the season, to make it 4-0 in the fifth.
Columbia's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth. Mark Patrick Flynn was hit by a pitch and Matt Karo singled to start things off. Ben Porter drew a base on balls to load the bases for Will Savage, who chopped one to short for a fielder's choice to plate Flynn. However, Remo got the next two batters to pop up and line out to retire the side.
The Lions used seven pitchers, with the bullpen throwing seven innings of one-run ball and allowing just five hits. Senior lefty George Martin struck out the side in order in the seventh to highlight the day for the relievers.
Columbia returns to action this weekend against Princeton for a four-game series at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. The set will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23, at noon. In between games, the Lions will honor returning members of the 1976 and 1977 baseball teams that won back-to-back Ivy League Championships. Fans can watch the action live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
