INSIDE THE SERIES: Columbia will seek its first ever program win against the Hawks on Wednesday, as the two teams have played four matches since 2006. This will be the first time any current Columbia player has faced Monmouth, as the last meeting between the programs came in 2012.
ABOUT THE HAWKS: Now in his 13th season with Monmouth, Robert McCourt, who has led the Hawks to nine conference titles, has his team off to a 0-3-2 start in 2016. Monmouth was bested by UMBC on Saturday, 3-2, after a 0-3 loss to Colgate on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Senior midfielder Colin Stripling leads the team in goals, netting a pair on the season after earning first team All-MAAC honors in 2015. Junior Chris Seager has started four of five contests in goal, but is 0-3-1 with 10 goals against and 14 saves.
ABOUT THE LIONS: After a split in the Midwest against Michigan and Michigan State, Columbia picked up a 1-0 win in its last outing against Central Connecticut on Saturday. Vana Markarian earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors when he knocked a header into the back of the net from a Nike Azuma corner kick, producing the game-winner.
IN NET: Zachary Adler posted his second shutout in three games against the Blue Devils, saving all six shot on goal attempts in the process. The junior has allowed only two goals in 2016, saving 89% of all shots.
WEEKLY WINNER: Markarian was the second weekly winner in the Ivy League this week, as Arthur Bosua also picked up the honors after the opening weekend. Bosua earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors after three points in the first two games, giving him a weekly award for the third time in his career.
CAPTAINS SALUTE: The captains for the 2016 season were named last week, as Alex Bangerl, Bosua and Andrew Tinari will lead the team this season. The trio boast impressive resumes, combining to make five All-Ivy League teams.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME: In the midst of constructing a new Season Air-Supported Structure in the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, Columbia has announced four men's contests that were initially scheduled at home have been relocated to Manhattanville College. The Lions have three matches remaining in Purchase, with Binghamton (Sept. 18), Drexel (Oct. 4) and Temple (Oct. 11) still on the slate.
