NEW YORK – A second-half comeback helped Navy escape Levien Gymnasium with a 73-68 win over the Columbia men's basketball team.
Mike Smith dropped in a game-high 28 points on a career-best 11-15 shooting, while Myles Hanson scored a career-high 14, and Tai Bibbs tied a career-best with 12 as the Lions fell to 1-9 on the season.
Columbia came out on fire in the first half, leading 10-2 at the first media timeout thanks to three-pointers by Quinton Adlesh and Smith. The lead grew to 11 on the first of three triples from Tai Bibbs, before the first-year dropped in another later in the half to make it 20-9 with 10:47 remaining.
The Lions led by as much as 15 in the first half, when Hanson knocked down a three with 3:21 on the clock to make it 34-19. Navy was able to cut the lead to eight before the half, closing the frame on a trey from Hasan Abdullah.Â
A 14-4 run by the Midshipmen to start the second gave Navy a 46-44 lead, powered by a dunk by Bryce Dulin with 15:03 to play to give the guests the edge. Columbia quickly fought back, moving the lead the other way by as much as eight, thanks to a 3-for-3 trip to the line by Hanson followed by a layup from the first-year with 11:25 to play.
Navy again fought back, cutting the Lion lead to one on a triple from Abdullah with 5:21 on the clock. Abdullah then tied the game 64-64 with 1:55 to play, and then held on at the free throw line. Smith cut a Navy lead to 70-68 on a layup with 15 seconds to play before a Navy traveling call gave the Lions a chance to tie the game. On the inbound pass, Smith had a nice look from the free throw line that rimmed-out, before Navy gathered the rebound and put the game away at the line, 73-68.
The Columbia bench out-scored Navy 32-9, fueled by Hanson's 14 and Bibbs' 12. Jaron Faulds moved into the Ivy League lead with three blocks, as the rookie now has 15 through 10 games.Â
