PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Chandler Bengtson is the third consecutive Columbia baseball student-athlete to earn Ivy League Player of the Week after a monster offensive performance in four games last week for the Lions. He shares the honor with Yale's Benny Wanger, who was named co-playe of the week. This is Bengtson's second time earning the accolade after being named Player of the Week on April 24, 2017.
Bengtson put up video-game like numbers, registering a 1.863 OPS with six runs, three homers and nine RBI. The first baseman helped Columbia earn its seventh straight win over St. John's April 4, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and two key RBI that proved to be the difference in the sixth in a 7-6 victory.
The Fresno, California, native had a monster final two games against Dartmouth Sunday, belting a solo homer in the opener before unloading two more bombs in the series finale to help the Lions avoid a sweep. Both homers were three-run shots for his third career five-plus RBI performance. Bengtson is now riding a 26-game on-base streak and is tied with teammate Randell Kanemaru with 17 career dingers for 10th on Columbia's career list.
Joining Bengtson on the list of honorees is sophomore pitcher Jordan Chriss, who landed on the weekly honor roll. Chriss made two relief appearances and combined to toss 4.2 shutout innings with six strikeouts against the Red Storm and Big Green.
Columbia is back in action tomorrow afternoon, April 11, at Monmouth. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
