NEW YORK — Columbia baseball came from behind to defeat Stony Brook, 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. The Lions used a go-ahead grand slam from Anthony Temesvary in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead, and held on in the top of the ninth to pick up the win.
The Lions improved to 11-21 overall with the victory, while Stony Brook fell to 14-23.
Columbia's offense blasted a season-high six doubles and 12 hits. Anthony Temesvary led the squad, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, including the decisive grand slam in the eighth inning that broke the game open. Hunter Snyder put the Lions on board with a two-run homer in the second inning. Cole Fellows finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Jack Kail and Tate Vogler each contributed two hits and two runs.
The Seawolves struck first as Chanz Doughty drove a solo home run to deep left field to give Stony Brook a 1-0 advantage.
In the second inning, Stony Brook loaded the bases after a single from Luke Szepek and a walk by Johnny Pilla. James Schaffer delivered an RBI infield single to plate a runner, and Nick Zampieron followed with a run-scoring single to center, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Columbia turned to the bullpen shortly after, as Brendan Murphy made an immediate impact, inducing a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning in just one pitch.
The Lions responded immediately as Ben Fishel sparked the offense with a leadoff double to right, and Hunter Snyder drove him in with a two-run home run to right-center, cutting the Stony Brook's lead to just one run.
In the fifth inning, Columbia erased the deficit as Fellows knocked a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Vogler.
In the top of the sixth, Mike Villani grounded out to second base to bring home a run and give Stony Brook a 4-3 lead.
After Evan Kleinhans worked around traffic in the top half of the seventh, stranding two runners to escape a jam, the Lions' offense answered immediately. Kail ignited the inning with a leadoff double to right-center before Fellows delivered the go-ahead run, lining an RBI double to right-center to plate Kail and tie the game up at 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Lions quickly threatened as Owen Estabrook worked a walk and Vogler followed with a double to left-center, putting runners on second and third. With first base open, Stony Brook intentionally walked Kail. Anthony Temesvary made them pay as Temesvary, on the first pitch he saw, launched a grand slam to deep left field, clearing the bases as Columbia took the lead for good, 8-4.
Starter Will Harrigan battled through the opening frames, striking out one over 1.1 innings of work. Brendan Murphy tossed 2.2 scoreless and hitless frames.
Jack Korthas followed and worked through two innings, allowing just one run before Evan Kleinhans delivered a clean inning and stranded baserunners to keep the game within reach.
In the late innings, Martin Zhang (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless frame.
