Columbia drops series opener before Santana’s dominant outing secures game two win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Columbia baseball split its Sunday doubleheader at Brown, falling 6-1 in the opener before handing the Bears their largest conference loss this season with a dominant 11-2 victory in game two. The Lions are now 10-21 overall and 6-8 in Ivy League play, while Brown is 17-14 and 9-4 in the Ancient Eight.
Game 1
Brown's offense got going early on in the game and put the first run on board in the opening frame. After Matt Luigs sparked the inning with a leadoff double down the left field line, the Bears advanced him to third on a sacrifice bunt before plating the run on a Columbia fielding error.
Brown added to its lead in the second inning as Mark Henshon reached with a single and advanced into scoring position, Jack Edmunds delivered with a two-out RBI double to center field, bringing Henshon home to extend the advantage to 2-0.
The Bears added an insurance fifth inning that seemed to seal the win as DJ Dillehay added a three run homer, stretching the lead to 5-0. In the sixth inning, Brown tacked on another run to make it a 6-0 game.
Columbia attempted to mount a comeback in the seventh. After drawing three walks to load the bases, the Lions plated their first run when Anthony Temesvary was hit by a pitch, forcing in Ben Fishel and cutting into Brown's lead, 5-1.
On the mound, Brown received a strong outing from starter Peter Dubie (3-4), who limited Columbia to one run on three hits over six innings while working around four walks to secure the win.
Columbia's staff was led by Alex Sotiropoulos, who logged five innings in relief with four strikeouts, while Baylor Hicks (1-4) took the loss after allowing two runs in the opening frames. Brendan Murphy added a scoreless inning out of the bullpen as the Lions' pitching staff totaled eight strikeouts in the afternoon.
Game 2
In the nightcap, Thomas Santana struck out six and allowed just one run over seven innings, while the Lions' offense erupted to even the series.
Columbia's offense broke through in a big way, totaling 17 hits to power the victory. Jackson Brewer led the charge with a three-hit, three-RBI performance, while Jack Kail added two hits and three RBI. Jimmy Chadwell also contributed a strong day at the plate with four hits and two RBI.
Much like game one, Brown struck first in the opening inning. After Luigs reached and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, DJ Dillehay delivered an RBI double to center field to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
The Lions roared in the second inning as Kail buried a two-run homer, his second of the season, to put Columbia in front, 2-1.
Columbia struck again in the fourth with an explosive offensive surge, plating four runs to take control of the game. Brewer sparked the inning with a go-ahead home run to right field before the Lions continued to apply pressure. Fishel reached and moved into scoring position, setting up RBI doubles from Hunter Snyder and Charlie Slabaugh that extended the lead to 5-1.
Kail notched another single RBI to plate Snyder in the seventh inning. In the next frame, Brewer got on base after a single, stole second and advanced to third after a wild pitch. Chadwell delivered his first RBI of the night to plate Brewer and stretch the lead to 7-1.
Columbia added insurance in the eighth inning, erupting for four runs to put the game out of reach. Cole Fellows posted an RBI single before Brewer delivered a two-run double to right field. Chadwell followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring and extend the lead to 11-1.
The Bears tallied another run at the end, but the Lions bullpen closed out the game for good.
