Seven Columbia women's tennis players travel to Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania for three-day Cissie Leary Invitational.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Columbia women's tennis team will compete in its second fall invitational this weekend when it travels to Philadelphia for the 22nd annual Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational. The three-day event will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Hecht (Levy) Tennis Center on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday before crowning champions on Sunday. Complete brackets and draws are available at this link. Official tournament information is available at this link.
First contested in 1997, the Cissie Leary Invitational honors the memory and legacy of Cissie Leary, head women's tennis coach at Penn from 1977-96. She had 16 winning seasons at the helm of the Red and Blue, compiling a career record of 229-119. In 1995, her team was 16-7 overall, and 6-1 in the Ivy League to earn a trip to the NCAA East Regional. Leary passed away in November, 1996 following a long battle with scleroderma and this tournament has been held every year since in her honor.
Columbia is one of four Ivy League schools competing in the invitational. Teams competing include Columbia, Cornell, Drexel, host Penn, Penn State, Princeton and Temple will be in University City for the weekend.
Columbia will send seven players to the invitational including seniors Andrea Kevakian and Sarah Hu, sophomores Jennifer Kerr, Christie Wan and Paulina Ferrari and first-years Akanksha Bhan and Yekaterina Alferova. See Columbia's assigned draws below.
