UNIVERSITY PARK, PA- Columbia fencing found success in Happy Valley today, with both squads finishing 4-2 through the six rounds of bouts. Today's duel meet was the first meet back after winter break, and the beginning of the busy months of January and February.
"It's great to be back in season," Head Fencing Coach Michael Aufrichtig said. "Solid fencing and it's always fun to be on the road with the team. I am looking forward towards working together this week before taking on strong programs next weekend.
During the women's competition the Lions finished with a 4-2 record overall, finishing ahead of North Carolina, Duke, Penn, and Temple. the Epee fencers stood tall for the Lions, sweeping the competition 6-0, with Elise Gout taking home two perfect rounds of competition. For women's foil, Giana Vierheller also found success on the strip, finishing 3-0 in four rounds, and earning a 9-3 record for the day.
For the men's competition, Columbia also found success with their Epee fencers, again taking home a perfect 6-0 team record for the day. Teddy Lombardo was came out on top of the field for four of five rounds today. In men's sabre, Andrew Doddo finished with a 9-2 record helping his weapon finish 4-2 in team competition.
Next up for the Lions is a trip over to Queens to participate in the St. John's Super Cup next Saturday. At the Super Cup, the Lions will be facing strong opponent such as Harvard, Notre Dame, Penn State, St. John's and Ohio State.
