Lions Drop Heartbreaker Against Yale, 4-3, in OT
11/1/2019 9:31:00 PM | Field Hockey
Yale's Olivia Levieux scored twice, including on a penalty stroke in overtime, to give the Bulldogs the win.
Alexa Conomikes was tested throughout the game and made 12 stops on the evening. The Lions (7-8, 3-3) were awarded 13 penalty corners, including one with time winding down in regulation, but could not convert.
The teams traded goals over a span of 21 seconds in the first quarter, with Bridget Condie giving the Bulldogs and early lead in the sixth minute before a swift response by Columbia. Kelsey Farkas chopped at a ball from the top of the circle that found its way to Jaimie McCormick in front and the junior posted her fourth of the year to make it 1-1.
Late in the first quarter, Allison Smith made a great move to get by a Yale defender and centered the ball where there were two Columbia forwards lurking by the cage. Helen Sayegh picked it up and slid it under the pads of the Bulldogs' goalie for her first career goal.
Yale struck again the 19th minute when Levieux connected with Katie Pieterse to send the game deadlocked, 2-2, heading into the half.
The Lions regained the lead in the third quarter off of Smith's redirection of a Jennifer Trieschman shot in the 34th minute only to see the Bulldogs draw even again just over six minutes later. Levieux's heavy shot off a corner deflected off of Conomikes pads and popped into the upper part of the net, setting up a dramatic finish to regulation
With less than a minute on the clock, Trieschman blasted a reverse shot that just went wide and as time expired, Ellie Decker's shot was acrobatically turned away by Yale netminder Sydney Terroso with time ticking down. After the save, Columbia's corner try was executed well, but the Lions could not get the ball past the line before time expired.
In the overtime session, the Bulldogs took possession deep in the Lions' zone and a foul in the circle gave Levieux the chance to play hero and her hard shot found its way into the left side of the net.
The Lions will host No. 15 Harvard Friday, November 8 at 6 p.m. on Senior Night. Admission is free. Fans can also catch the game live on ESPN+.
