VESTAL, N.Y.—Six Columbia wrestlers—senior
Dan Reed (157 pounds), senior
Max Elling (174 pounds), junior
Laurence Kosoy (165 pounds), sophomore
Brian Bonino (184 pounds), sophomore
Daniel Herman (heavyweight) and first-year
Joe Manchio (125 pounds)—are still alive following day one at the 2019 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships which began Friday morning at the Binghamton University Events Center.
Day Two of the EIWA Championships will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The championships consist of a two-day double elimination event in which individuals from all 16 EIWA teams compete for bids to the NCAA Championships. The EIWA earned a total of 47 bids by the NCAA.
With seven wrestlers and five first-years competing in their first-ever EIWA Championship event, Columbia's Andrew F. Barth Head Coach
Zach Tanelli saw nine of his 10 wrestlers win at least one match apiece, while three advanced in championship play with first round victories. All six Columbia wrestlers that remain alive continue to advance through the consolation bracket and each captured two of three bouts on Friday.
Senior
Dan Reed won two of three matches and remains one of eight wrestlers in contention for the six NCAA Championship bids at 157 pounds. He takes on Navy's Quenton Hovis tomorrow. Reed rebounded from a first round 11-6 loss to Brown's Christian LaBrie, a wrestler he defeated during the regular season, with a third period takedown and 4-2 win over Franklin & Marshall's Emmett Licastri. He advanced to the consolation round of four with a come-from-behind 6-4 win over Harvard's Hunter Ladnier. He found himself down 2-0, battled back to tie, then registered a takedown in the second period. Ladnier tied it at 4-4, but Reed used a takedown before time ran out to advance. The win over Ladnier avenged Reed's earlier loss to the Harvard wrestler earlier in the season.
Junior
Laurence Kosoy advanced to the consolation round of four after going 2-1 on the day. He meets No. 2 seed Jon Viruet (Brown) in tomorrow's consolation round of four. Eight wrestlers remain in the 165-pound weight class for four NCAA bids. Kosoy advanced to the championship quarterfinal round with a technical fall 18-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall's Crew Fullerton. In the quarterfinal, he dropped a close 3-0 decision to No. 3 seed Tanner Skidgel of Navy. In his third match, he took a 2-0 then 4-0 lead on takedowns and went on to register a convincing 5-0 win over American's Anthony Wokasch.
Senior
Max Elling came from behind to register an 11-8 win over Drexel's Bryan McLaughlin to remain alive in consolation competition at 174 pounds. Elling takes on No. 3 seed Ben Harvey (Army) tomorrow as eight wrestlers are competing for five 174-pound NCAA bids. Elling dropped a 6-1 decision to Hofstra's Ricky Stamm in the first round, an opponent he defeated 7-1 earlier in the year, but rebounded by dominating Sacred Heart's Anthony Falbo with a technical fall 20-2 win (4:29) in the consolation round of eight. Elling fell behind early against McLaughlin but battled back to advance.
A 10 seed upon entering the 184-pound competition, sophomore
Brian Bonino finds himself in contention with two wins on the day. Bonino faces No. 6 Tanner Harvey (American) in tomorrow's first match. Eight wrestlers remain for six spots at 184 pounds. Bonino registered an 11-9 win over No. 7 seed Princeton's Kevin Parker in the first round. The victory avenged a 12-6 loss to Parker during the regular season. He moved into the consolation bracket following a 6-2 quarterfinal loss to No. 2 seed Lou DePrez (Binghamton). In a close match, Bonino tied the score at 1-1 to force overcome after overcoming an early 1-0 deficit, then registered a sudden victory takedown with one second left to defeat Navy's Anthony Cable, 3-1. It was Bonino's fourth sudden victory of the year.
At 125 pounds, first-year
Joe Manchio remains in contention after winning two straight consolation matches. Four wrestlers will earn NCAA bids at 125 pounds and Manchio faces No. 5 seed Audey Ashkar (Binghamton) tomorrow. He dropped an 8-2 decision to American's Gabe Curry in the first round. In his first consolation bout, he built a 5-3 lead to start the third period, recorded a takedown and advanced with an 11-5 win over Franklin & Marshall's Jose Diaz. Manchio then advanced to the consolation round of four with a clutch 9-8 win over Bucknell's Jacob Campbell. He took the lead with a takedown at the tail end of the second period, Campbell tied it at 6-6, then both wrestlers tied it at 8-8 with takedowns. The win over Camacho avenged a previous 2-1 loss during the regular season.

He moved into the consolation bracket after a 12-4 major decision over No. 3 seed Brandon Paetzell of Lehigh, but fell 3-2 to Brown's Hunter Kosco.
