A QUICK LOOK AT THE LIONS
Head Coach Rich Mueller put together a challenging schedule in 2018-19 and that competition should bode well for the Lions heading into this weekend's 2019 Ivy League Championship. The Lions enter the weekend with balance as all five Lions who will compete in the championships have experienced success in 2018-19.
Representing Columbia this weekend in Egg Harbor are junior Nick Brisebois, sophomore captain John Robertson, sophomore Arjun Puri, first-year Derek Kim and first-year Daniel Core. The Lions sport a youthful lineup as all five players will return to the squad next year.
First-year Core leads the Lions in stroke average (73.63 in 24 rounds) and par/under-par rounds with eight. He shot a team-low round of 66 against Menlo College in late March and fired a pair of 69s at the Bucknell and Princeton Invitationals, respectively. He led the Lions vs. Menlo, finished third vs. Florida Southern, tied for 11th at the Princeton Invitational after shooting an impressive three-under-par 71-70-69-210 and tied for 14th with a three-over-par 69-74-143 at the Bucknell Invitational in the fall. He has been especially impressive in the spring as he sports a 73.36 score in 14 rounds.
First-year Kim will compete in his first Ivy League Championship this weekend. In 16 rounds of play, Kim ranks second on the squad in stroke average (73.94) and has carded four rounds of par/under par golf. This spring, Kim leads the Lions in stroke average (73.09 in 11 rounds). His season highlight came at the Grand Canyon Invitational, March 15-16 in Phoenix, where he tied for the individual championship after shooting an eight-under-par 70-67-68-205. He became the first Lion to win an individual title since Brandon Jowers last accomplished the feat in 2014. Kim's score ranked as the third-best 54-hole score in school history.
As the team's captain, Robertson ranks third on the squad in stroke average at 74.14 (21 rounds). He has carded six par/under-par rounds, placed among the top-25 individuals in two invitationals and shot a career-low round of 69 at the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate (Round One). His best career performance came at the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate in Binghamton, N.Y., where he placed third after shooting a four-under-par 69-71-140. Robertson is competing in his second Ivy League Championship after finishing in 29th last year.
Puri, who qualified as a second alternate for the U.S. Open last summer, has progressively improved as the season has gone on. He enters the championship with a 75.16 scoring average in 19 rounds, three top-25 finishes and has put together four par/under-par rounds on the year. In Columbia's last two competitions, Puri has shot under 70 in two rounds: a career-low 68 at the Princeton Invitational and a 69 at the Columbia Invitational. Puri is competing in his second Ivy League Championship. His best individual performances have come in a 14th place finish at the Bucknell Invitational (+3, 72-71-143), an 18th place finish at the Princeton Invitational (+1, 68-73-73-214) and a 14th place finish at the Columbia Invitational (+7, 69-78-147). Puri will compete at his second Ivy League Championship after placing 27th last year.
Brisebois, who has carded four par/under-par rounds this year, leads the Lions in top-25 finishes on the year and enters the 2019 Ivy League Championship with a 74.46 scoring average (24 rounds). Brisebois was impressive in the fall as he led the Lions with a 72.90 scoring average (729 strokes, 10 rounds). His top performances of the year came during a seventh place finish at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational (+1, 73-71-73-217) and a 14th place finish at the Cornell Invitational (+3, 68-76-72-216). His career-low round is a 68 carded at Cornell. Brisebois is competing in his second consecutive Ivy League Championship after placing 34th last year.
Other Lions who have contributed to the squad in 2018-19 include junior Cullen Chung (76.29 average in 14 rounds), sophomore Youn Sung Kim (75.67 average in 21 rounds), sophomore Dan Terrell (75.30 average in 10 rounds), senior Sunny Yan (78.38 average in eight rounds) and first-year Pat Healy (77.50 average in 10 rounds).
