Fairfield Strikes Late to Take 1-0 Win Over Lions

The Stags' Page Lowry scored in the 59th minute to break up a scoreless tie.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield's Page Lowry broke a scoreless tie with 2:35 left in the fourth quarter to give the Stags a 1-0 victory over the Columbia field hockey team Friday afternoon. Fairfield (6-1) outshot the Lions (3-2) 10-0 in the second half and finally broke through on a scramble play and held off Columbia in the final moments.
Reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week Alexa Conomikes was strong between the pipes, making four stops in the contest.
The Lions controlled the possession game in the first quarter, but it did not lead to many offensive chances because of solid work by the Stags' in their own end. Conomikes blockered away the only shot on goal for either team with just over 2:00 left in the stanza to keep the game scoreless after 15 minutes.
End-to-end action to start the second with each team narrowly missing the target on the attack. The best chance of the half came when a giveaway led to a Fairfield two-on-one, but a Maaike Blindenbach hustled back to break up the play. From there, Columbia and the Stags played to a deadlock for the remainder of the quarter.
In the third quarter, the Lions fended off three Fairfield corners and Conomikes was forced to make a couple of key stops to set up a dramatic final period.
The Lions regained some of the momentum in the fourth quarter, however, they did not register a shot. The Stags cashed in on its third corner of the stanza. Conomikes kicked away the initial shot and a rebound was blocked, but Lowry fielded the loose ball and just got enough on the shot for it to trickle past the goal line.
Columbia hosts UMass-Lowell in its home opener Sunday, September 22. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at the Baker Athletics Complex. Admission is free. Fans can also watch the contest live on ESPN+.
