UMass Lowell Spoils Columbia's Home Opener With 2-1 Win

The Lions held the Riverhawks to just one shot in the second half, but could not break through.
NEW YORK – UMass Lowell edged the Columbia field hockey team, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in the Lions home opener. The Riverhawks (4-3) broke a 1-1 tie in the 42nd minute off a Leah Cardarelli score and held off Columbia (3-3) over the final 18 minutes to pick up the victory.
UML forced the issue in the first quarter, registering seven shots with four coming on target. The Riverhawks earned a corner in the 13th minute and posted an initial shot that was turned away by the Lions goalkeeper Alexa Conomikes. However, the ball stayed loose and Anouk Lalande just got a piece of it to give UMass Lowell the 1-0 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Lions settled in and drew its first corner of the game in the 24th minute. Jennifer Trieschman ripped a shot from the top of the circle and Isabella Collins was stationed in front for a tip-in goal to knot things up.
Things stayed that way until the 42nd minute when the Riverhawks took the lead for good. Berbel Rozema charged down the left side of the field and with pressure coming, dove and slid the ball to Cardelli, who put it into the back of the net.
That would be the only shot UML would record in the second half, but Columbia's three shots on target were all denied by Riverhawk netminder Eva Berkout.
Columbia begins Ivy League play Friday, September 27 against Brown at the Baker Athletics Complex. Game time is set for 5 p.m. Admission is free. Fans can also catch the action live on ESPN+.
