Allison Smith's two goals lifted the Lions to a win in their Ivy League opener Friday night.
NEW YORK – Allison Smith scored a pair of goals to lead the Columbia field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Brown in its Ivy League opener Friday night. The win gave the Lions their 12th win in the last 13 tries in the series against the Bears.
Columbia (4-3, 1-0) grabbed the lead in the 12th minute when Kelsey Farkas slipped a pass through the middle of the circle to Isabella Collins, who tapped it in under the pads of the sliding Brown (2-6, 0-1) goalkeeper. The Lions continued to control the possession game into the second quarter and doubled the lead when a shot of a corner was denied and Smith scooped up the rebound to make it 2-0 in the 24th minute.
Brown pulled within a goal when a fluttering shot from Danielle van Rootselaar went into the left side of the cage in the 28th minute.
After the half, Columbia was aggressive to keep the momentum in the third quarter and broke through in the 35th minute. Off another corner, Brooke Gasser's shot from the left wing was redirected in by Smith in front of the cage to restore the two-goal advantage.
Just over five minutes later, the Lions were awarded a penalty stroke after a deliberate foul in the scoring area. Farkas stepped up and rattled a shot into the left side of the goal for her fourth of the season.
Van Rootselaar posted her second of the game in the 53rd minute to cap the scoring. However, Columbia limited Brown's chances down the stretch to start Ancient Eight play with a win for the third consecutive season.
Two-time defending Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, Alexa Conomikes, stopped five shots on the night. Shots between the teams were even at 13-13.
The Lions will return to the road this Sunday, September 29, when they face off against Quinnipiac in Hamden, Connecticut. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
