Columbia to Dedicate Levien Gymnasium Floor in Honor of Jonathan Schiller '69CC '73LAW

A special ceremony will take place at halftime of the men's basketball game against Yale on Saturday, February 22

NEW YORK – Columbia Athletics will dedicate the center court in Levien Gymnasium in honor of Jonathan D. Schiller '69CC '73LAW in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the University, the athletics department and the men's basketball program. The main playing surface for Columbia's varsity basketball and volleyball teams will now be known as Jonathan D. Schiller Court in Levien Gymnasium.

The celebration will begin at halftime of the Lions' men's basketball game on Saturday, February 22 against Yale, in conjunction with Alumni Weekend festivities. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

"We are so grateful for everything Jonathan does for athletics and our basketball programs," stated Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Peter Pilling. "He is an outstanding ambassador for the University and serves as a mentor to many of our student-athletes. We are so pleased to be dedicating the floor in his honor on February 22."

"For more than 50 years, Columbia basketball has been a constant and transformative element in my life," said Schiller. "I first stepped onto this gym floor as a first-year with trepidation in 1965. Three years later, in 1968, we were Ivy League basketball champions and made a run in the NCAA Tournament! In the decades since then, I have been privileged to work with many committed alumni in support of the basketball program, including through the last decade with Columbia's Board of Trustees and President Lee Bollinger. The dedication of this beautiful gym floor is a great honor for my family."

"I am indeed honored and fortunate to be associated with Columbia basketball through this court dedication," Schiller continued. "I look forward to our women's and men's teams nailing 3-pointers from the spot where the "D" is on the floor in pursuit of Ivy League championships. Go Lions!"

A three-year letter winner for Columbia, Schiller was a member of the 1967-68 Ivy League men's basketball championship team, ranked fifth in the country, which was inducted into the Columbia University Athletics Hall of Fame in February 2006. Schiller was a frontcourt player who competed alongside future NBA players Jim McMillian and Dave Newmark under Columbia Hall of Fame head coach Jack Rohan.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree from Columbia College in 1969, Schiller went on to graduate from Columbia Law School with his J.D. in 1973. Schiller is the co-founder and Managing Partner of Boies Schiller Flexner LLP and oversees the firm's pro-bono program. He received the John Jay Award from Columbia College in 2006 and the Alexander Hamilton Medal for "distinguished service and accomplishment" from the school in 2012. A member of the Dean's Council of Columbia Law School, Schiller was named a University Trustee in 2009. Last February, Schiller was awarded the Law School's Medal for Excellence, the highest honor at the institution, which exemplifies the qualities of character, intellect, and social and professional responsibility that it seeks to instill in its students.

He was appointed as co-chair of the University Trustees in 2014, along with Columbia Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Bill Campbell, and served as the sole chair from 2015-18. During that time, he led Columbia's board through a pivotal period in the university's history that included the planning and development of Columbia's groundbreaking new Manhattanville campus and establishing a national model in policies, personnel, and research addressing gender-based misconduct on campus. Each of his three sons are also Columbia graduates: Zachary, Columbia College (2001); Joshua, Columbia Law School (2008) and Aaron, Columbia College (2006).

In 2017, Schiller was named an inaugural Legend of Ivy League Basketball for achievements and contributions to the Ivy League.

One of the most highly regarded commercial litigators and arbitration lawyers in the United States and overseas, Schiller has served as lead counsel in numerous high-profile cases for clients including Barclays, Goldman Sachs, the New York Yankees, YES, the Baltimore Orioles and MASN, KKCG and DraftKings. In recognition of his professional attainment, distinguished service and extraordinary leadership in the legal profession, Schiller has been elected a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Supreme Court Historical Society.

Schiller has been a key contributor to the Campbell Championship Fund, an initiative launched in 2016 to support the top priorities of Columbia Athletics, with the goal of building championship programs and experiences for all student-athletes. Additionally, he established the Jonathan D. Schiller Scholarship Fund at Columbia College and supported the Jonathan D. Schiller Fellowship in International Human Rights at the Law School, which provides opportunities to students involved in the work of Human Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School.
