Columbia could not come out on top in Mike Smith and Jake Killingsworth's final home game.
NEW YORK — Senior Mike Smith continued his chase for Columbia's single-season scoring record with a game-high 25 points, but Dartmouth came away with a 76-57 victory on senior night. Smith also added eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals in 39 minutes of action.
The native of Burr Ridge, Illinois, is now 58 points shy of Chet Forte's mark of 694 points, set in 1956-57, with two games to go.
Ike Nweke chipped in 14 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Senior Jake Killingsworth, who along with Smith, was honored in a pregame ceremony posted seven points and six rebounds in his final contest on Schiller Court.
The Big Green (12-15, 5-7) used a barrage of 3-pointers to build a 37-30 halftime edge, going 9-of-22 in the frame. Dartmouth knocked down three triples in a row at one point and took a 10-point lead after Trevon Ary-Turner knocked oen down from beyond the arc with 4:12 left in the half. Smith answered with the next five to trim it to 35-30 at the 2:17 mark, but Chris Knight capped the first-half scoring with a layup with 54 seconds before the intermission.
Smith and Nweke teamed up for the first nine Lion (6-22, 1-11) points of the second half to make it 40-39 at the 15:27 mark. With Columbia trailing by just three, Knight came up with a steal and raced down the floor for a dunk to spark a 10-2 run to extend the margin to 53-45 with 10:26 to go.
Killingsworth found a cutting Smith with 5:59 left to cut that lead down to five, however Dartmouth came out of the under-eight media timeout with six unanswered to put the game away.
Knight led the Big Green with 19 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor. He also added 10 boards and six assists. James Foye went 5-of-9 from beyond the arc on his way to 15 points.
Dartmouth won the battle on the glass, 45-38.
The Lions will face Princeton in Jadwin Gymnasium Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. Fans can catch the game on ESPN+.
