The Braves took McGill with the 277th pick in the ninth round on day two of the MLB Draft.
NEW YORK – Liam McGill '20CC was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 277th pick in the ninth round of the 2021 Major League Baseball entry draft Tuesday, July 12. McGill, a former standout from 2017-19 with the Lions, played a graduate season at Bryant University in 2021 where he earned All-America status and Northeast Player of the Year honors.
The catcher from Wakefield, Rhode Island, becomes the 10th player drafted under head coach Brett Boretti and the first since Josh Simpson in 2019 (32nd round by the Miami Marlins). Additionally, McGill is the highest draft pick for Columbia since Fernando Perez was taken in the seventh round (192nd overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays. Only Robert Bossom (Los Angeles Dodgers – second round), Steve Richman (Minnesota Twins – fourth round) and Perez were taken higher than McGill under the current draft system.
At Columbia, McGill was two-time All-Ivy League selection and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American in 2017. The catcher posted a career .316 batting average with 14 homers and 83 RBI in three-plus seasons with the Lions.
