Fellows stays hot with a homer and two hits in the defeat
NEW YORK — Cole Fellows homered for the third time this week, but Columbia couldn't overcome an early deficit as Princeton secured the series with a 4-2 win on Sunday.
The Lions fell to 8-20 overall and 5-7 in Ivy League play, while the Tigers improved to 9-21 and 4-8 in conference action.
Fellows paced Columbia offensively, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, while Lucas Jackson added an RBI.
Columbia struck first in the second inning when Fellows launched the first pitch he saw over the right-field wall to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Princeton responded immediately with a three-run second inning. The Tigers capitalized on a Columbia error to score two runs before Tommy Googins delivered an RBI single to put Princeton ahead, 3-1.
The Lions threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. Fellows reached and moved to third after walks by Ben Fishel and Charlie Slabaugh. Jackson drove in Fellows on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Princeton's bullpen escaped further damage.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth when Isaac Lamson found a hole on the left side to bring home a run and extend the lead to 4-2.
Thomas Santana (2-3) turned in a solid outing for Columbia, allowing three runs (none earned) over 6.0 innings while striking out six. Brendan Murphy followed with 3.0 innings of relief, striking out three.
Justin Kim (3-4) earned the win for Princeton after tossing 6.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Ryan Penney recorded the final nine outs for his second save of the season.
