Hicks and Soske each fanned five batters in the Lions’ lone victory in the afternoon
The Lions improved to 8-19 overall and 5-6 in the Ivy League. The Tigers moved to 8-20 and 3-8 in conference play.
Game 1
Princeton jumped to an early start, scoring five runs in the opening frame and never looked back.
Jack Kail led the lineup, going 3-for-5, including two doubles and three RBI. Cole Fellows added a strong game at the plate with two hits and two RBI. Hunter Snyder reached base three times, scored three runs, and drove in one.
Princeton wasted no time setting the tone, plating five runs in the top of the first inning. A hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded opened the scoring before Brady Kaufman delivered a two-run double to extend the lead. RBI hits from Bennett Crerar and Tommy Googins pushed the Tigers in front, 5-0.
Columbia began to chip away in the third inning as Snyder jumpstarted the offense with a leadoff double to deep right. After advancing into scoring position, Snyder came around to score on a clutch RBI single from Kail down the right field line, putting the Lions on the board, 5-1.
The Lions continued to apply pressure in the fifth. Lucas Jackson opened the inning with a double before Snyder worked a walk to put two on. Following a sacrifice bunt from Jimmy Chadwell that moved both runners into scoring position, Anthony Temesvary drove in a run on a groundout to cut into the deficit. Kail delivered again with an RBI double to center, and Fellows capped the rally with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Kail and cutting the deficit within one, 5-4.
Just as Columbia closed the gap, Princeton responded with its biggest swing of the game. Jake Koonin launched a grand slam to right field, restoring the four-run lead. 9-4. Later in the frame, Brady Kaufman added a two-RBI infield single to cap the inning.
In the seventh, Kail doubled home Snyder before Fellows tripled down the left field line to score Kail, trimming the deficit.
The Lions added one more in the eighth when Snyder lined an RBI single to center, but Princeton's bullpen limited further damage to close out the game.
Alex Sotiropoulos (1-3) took the loss after lasting 5.2 innings. Will Harrigan limited further damage, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief while allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Princeton's pitching staff was anchored by Liam Kinneen (1-2), who earned his first win of the season after working 6.2 innings.
Game 2
In the nightcap, Owen Estabrook led the lineup, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Ben Fishel added two hits and two RBI.
Evan Kleinhans got the start and worked 3.0 innings, and struck out two. Baylor Hicks followed in relief, tossing 2.1 innings, recording five strikeouts to keep the Lions within reach. Payton Soske (1-0) earned the win, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts while allowing just three hits.
Princeton struck first in the opening frame, capitalizing on early traffic to plate three runs on four hits. After loading the bases, Jake Kernodle delivered an RBI single to bring home the game's first run. The Tigers added to the lead on an RBI knock from Joe Montembeau, with an additional run scoring on a Columbia throwing error to give Princeton a 3-0 advantage.
Columbia answered immediately and went through the entire batting lineup in the bottom half with a three-run response of its own. Charlie Slabaugh ignited the inning with a leadoff double before the Lions strung together timely hits. Temesvary lined an RBI single to center, Estabrook followed with another run-scoring knock, and Fishel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to even the score at 3-3 after one inning.
Princeton regained the lead in the second from an RBI hit from Werdesheim in the second. In the third, the Tigers put two in scoring position after a leadoff double from Joe Montembeau and a walk. Jake Koonin delivered an RBI single up the middle before Thomas Cernius followed with an RBI fielder's choice to plate another to give the Tigers a three-run cushion.
Columbia responded in the bottom half, as Estabrook led off with a double and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Jackson to pull the Lions within 6-4.
The Lions broke through in the seventh inning by stringing together the largest offensive push in the afternoon. Chadwell worked a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position before the Lions loaded the bases. Anthony Temesvary drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run, setting Snyder up, who delivered a two-run single through the left side to cut further into the deficit. Later in the inning, Ben Fishel added an RBI single to center, capping the four-run frame, taking the lead for good.
