Patterson, Anderson, Berg punch tickets to Nationals
NEW YORK — Four Columbia cross country runners earned All-Region honors to highlight the Lions' performances at the NCAA Northeast Regional, which was held Friday at historic Van Cortlandt Park.
On the women's side, Victoria Patterson, Phoebe Anderson and Elia Ton-That crossed the line in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, out of 254 runners. The trio led the Lions to third place out of 37 total teams. Patterson and Anderson crossed nearly simultaneously in times of 20:34.5 and 20:34.6, while Ton-That, a first-year, pulled in just a few steps back at 20:36.2.
"That was the most fun I've ever had in a race," said Anderson, who returns to Nationals for a second-straight year. "It just kept me going to be able to run with my team and run with people."
"It's totally unlike anything I've ever done before, coming here and having two great role models to look up to," said Ton-That, who will await the selection show to see if she, too, qualified as an individual. "I knew going into the race, even though I started a little further back, that I belong here up with them. It was great to feed off that energy."
"I'm so excited to go back to OSU. I competed there two years ago … and it's just such a special course," said Patterson, who ran at OSU before transferring over to Columbia from Duke. "To go with Phoebe and potentially Elia just makes it so special."
On the men's side, senior Tyler Berg highlighted the race with a third-place finish in 29:26.2. He was impressive the entire race, running in the lead pack the entire way and sitting no worse than fourth at any of the splits. Berg's finish also earned him an automatic ticket to the National Meet next weekend in Stillwater.
"I was really looking for redemption today and it went perfectly," said Berg, who finished 10th two weeks ago on the same course at Ivy League Championships. "I ran the race I wanted and really can't complain. I felt great, and was really relaxed going through. I'm just trying to do something big in my last cross country race in a Columbia jersey."
