Ivy League home opener slated for Saturday
NEW YORK - Columbia field hockey (2-5, 0-1) opens October with back-to-back games at Baker Athletics Complex this weekend. The Lions host Cornell (4-3, 1-0) on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and then bounce right back for a 1:00 p.m. contest with Delaware (1-8, 0-1) on Sunday.
The Lions spent last weekend in Massachusetts, battling two top-15 teams in #14 Harvard and #12 UMass. CU dropped both games by a score of 3-1. Maya Walker and Meg Bowen were the goal scorers for Columbia. Despite the results, head coach Katie DeSandis loves what she saw against two of the best teams in the country.
"We've been playing the best hockey I've seen us play in my entire tenure here as a head coach," explained DeSandis. "Harvard was a really good test. We played them extremely well. The game was very neck-and-neck as far as midfield play goes. Now we have to learn how to keep that intensity throughout and then finish."
Finishing games has not been an issue for the Lions this season when they are the host school. Columbia is 2-0 on its home turf. "We've had some of our best performances here," said DeSandis.
Columbia faces a Cornell team on Saturday that has also played a challenging schedule thus far, going up against #5 Penn State and #9 Michigan in consecutive weeks earlier this season. The Big Red have two top-five leading scorers in the Ivy League in Caroline Ramsey and Grace Leahy.
Delaware may not be as successful as it has been in years past, but the record does not reflect the talent on the roster. "Delaware is always a strong individually skilled team. They're very good with their fundamentals and they're pretty physical," DeSandis said.
The Lions will not have much time to prepare for the Blue Hens on Sunday. This weekend marks the first back-to-back of the season for the Lions. "It's a good test for the team on how quickly we can make adjustments."
One Lions player who has been tested this season and has risen to the occasion is goalkeeper Katie Wimmer. The sophomore leads the Ivy League in saves (57) and saves per game (8.14). Wimmer and the Lions will be challenged this weekend, facing two teams that have combined for 90 corners on the season and are averaging 6.03 shots on goal per contest.
At Sunday's game, the Lions will be supporting the Broach Foundation, a 501 C 3 non-profit charitable organization for brain cancer research. You can donate to the Broach Foundation by clicking here.
