NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball earned another dominant victory on Wednesday night, defeating SUNY Delhi, 105-60, from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia (2-2) saw four players score in double-figures for the fourth straight game to start the season. Leading the Lions was sophomore forward Zine Eddine Bedri, who posted a career-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting. It was the most points by a Lion since Blair Thompson dropped 22 at Binghamton last Nov. 23. Kenny Noland (12), Zavian McLean (10), and first-year Arop Arop (10) were the other three Lions to score in double-figures.
The Lions shot 63.6 percent from the field (42-66), which is the highest mark under head coach Jim Engles. All 12 players for the Lions played at least 11 minutes and scored at least five points. It was Columbia's second straight game with over 20 assists.
Avery Brown's game-leading five steals marked a new career high for the sophomore. First-year guard Nicolo Romanelli set his career high in assists with 10, and junior guard Jaden Cooper also posted a career record in assists with seven. Romanelli is the first Lion to tally 10 assists in a game since Gabe Stefanini at Penn on Feb. 22, 2019.
The Lions got off to another fast start with a 12-0 run that saw each of the starters put points on the board. Columbia's defense, spearheaded by steals from Brown and Thompson, allowed the Lions to get out on the fast break for easy layups.
Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa made the team's first three of the game.
Columbia put things out of reach with a dominant 17-0 run that lasted nearly four minutes. Romanelli entered the game and capped off the run with an assist to Rubio De La Rosa for another three to go up 41-15 on the Broncos with 5:31 to go until the break.
Columbia closed the half on a 12-1 run over the last 2:54 to head back to the locker room with a 61-30 lead. The Lions shot an impressive 68.6 percent in the first half.
The second half saw Columbia expand their lead to as large as 48, as the Broncos (1-2) failed to stop the momentum. Arop put an exclamation mark on the Lions' win by picking off a pass and running a one-man fast break to secure his tenth point of the night with an emphatic dunk.
Columbia travels to Philadelphia to face Temple on Saturday at 1 p.m. for its first-ever tilt with the Owls.
