Lions open league play with Big Red Friday; host Pride Game Sunday
NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey hosts Cornell in its Ivy League opener Friday at 6 p.m. and then VCU on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Columbia Field Hockey Complex.

Columbia's Status
The Lions (2-2) are coming off back-to-back wins over Monmouth on Saturday and Lafayette on Sunday in the home opener. In Saturday's win, captain Lindsey Yu netted her second career game-winning goal to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage. Goalkeeper Katie Wimmer made five saves in the final frame and the Lions defense successfully defended three penalty corners.
Columbia defeated Lafayette on Sunday, 3-2. Yu, Delfina Gonzalez Lobo, and Sophia Abate found the back of the net. It was Gonzalez Lobo's first career goal.
Yu leads the team in goals (3), assists (3), and points (9). Mckenzie Bloom ranks second in points (5) followed by Kennedy Sholeen with four.
Wimmer Garners Ivy Weekly Award
Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Wimmer made a season-high nine saves in both wins over Monmouth on Saturday and Lafayette on Sunday. In Sunday's 3-2 victory, Wimmer stopped seven Leopards shots in the fourth quarter to protect a one-goal lead and help earn the Lions their second win in as many days. Wimmer also came up big in Saturday's one-goal win, stopping five Monmouth shots in the final 15 minutes of that match to secure the 2-1 victory.
Cornell's Status
The Big Red enter Friday's contest at 1-2 with their lone win coming against UConn. Caroline Ramsey, the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, has scored five goals in the team's first three games and is currently third nationally in goals per game (1.67). Julia Ramsey leads the nation in assists per game (1.67) with Claire Wolfe tied for fourth (1.00).
Series History - Cornell
Columbia is 6-20 all-time against Cornell. The two teams last met on Oct. 1, 2022 with the Big Red earning a road 3-1 victory. The Lions' most recent win in the series came in 2018.
VCU's Status
The Rams enter this weekend with a 4-1 record. VCU faces Saint Joseph's in its A10 opener before heading further north for the match with Columbia on Sunday. Mora Marrero leads the team with five goals and 13 points. Goalkeeper Sherid Messier has a 1.63 goals against average and a .774 save percentage.
Series History - VCU
Columbia is 1-2 all-time against the Rams, with the Lions winning the most recent matchup in 2012.
