Men’s Basketball Downed at California on Sunday

Connor Igoe led the offensive attack for the Lions with a career-high 16 points
BERKELEY, Calif. — Columbia men's basketball fought hard in a 74-56 defeat at California on Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Connor Igoe's career-best 16 points paced a spread out Columbia offense. The first-year shot 7-of-11 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds.
Mason Ritter added 10 points, while Gerard O'Keefe had nine. Kenny Noland recorded team-highs with seven rebounds and four assists. Columbia (9-3) shot 41.8 percent on the day, but went 16-28 from the floor in the second half (57.1 percent).
A 2-10 shooting start from the field had Columbia trailing 13-4 at the under-12 timeout of the first half. Ritter and Miles Franklin each combined for the Lions' first eight points.
Back-to-back layups by Ritter and Igoe brought the deficit back to nine with 3:39 until the break after Cal had led by as many as 13. The Golden Bears took a 28-16 halftime lead into the locker room. Both teams shot 17 percent from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
Columbia hung around to start the second half. Cal never led by more than 14 over the first eight minutes of the final frame. The Lions went on a 9-2 run down the stretch, capped by an Igoe and-one.
The Golden Bears (12-1) led by as much as 21 with 8:22 to play when Semetri Carr scored a layup.
After 12 first-half turnovers, Columbia surrendered just three in the second half. Cal's Dai Dai Ames had a game-high 21 points.
Columbia travels to Jacksonville to play at North Florida on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. for the teams' first-ever matchup.
