Kail's Heroics Lead Baseball to Walk-Off Win Over Dartmouth on Senior Day

The Lions move into a tie for first place in the Ivy League with walk-off win to complete sweep

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball walked-off Dartmouth, 9-8, to complete the series sweep and send the Lions home victorious on Senior Day. Columbia (18-16, 11-4) moved into a tie atop the Ivy League standings with Penn, while Dartmouth dropped to 7-21 and 5-10 in the conference with the loss.

The Lions have now swept three consecutive series against Dartmouth dating back to 2023.

After Jagger Edwards and Bryce Loeger held both offenses scoreless for 4.5 innings, Anthony Temesvary opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run blast. The Big Green answered right back in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on a Chris Miller double and a pair of Columbia miscues.

In the bottom of the sixth, Skye Selinsky plated two on a double to tie the game, and Tate Vogler put the Lions back in front on a double down the right field line. Once again, Dartmouth tied the game in the following half inning, taking advantage of another Columbia error to make it a 5-5 game.

Undeterred, Columbia punched back with three more runs on a go-ahead RBI double by Anton Lazits and a two-run home run by Jack Kail. In the visiting half of the eighth, Taer Rodriguez made it a two run game on a run-scoring double.

Columbia entered the ninth up 8-6 with Griffin Palfrey seeking the save. Fighting until the final out, the Big Green rallied for two runs and tied the game on a Jackson Hower bunt single.

In the home half of the ninth, it was Columbia's turn for some late heroics. After entering the game as a defensive replacement, senior Kyle Corso mashed a double off the top of the wall in center. After advancing on a wild pitch, Kail lined a deep ball to left that was deep enough to score Corso to win it for Columbia on a walk-off sac fly.

Griffin Palfrey earned the win in relief, earning his first victory of the year and moving to 1-1 on the season. Kyle Klaric-Schell took the loss out of the bullpen for Dartmouth, moving to 1-1 on the season as well.

The Lions return to action this Wednesday and seek a season-high sixth straight win as they travel to Stony Brook to battle the Seawolves at 3:30 p.m. Columbia will take on Penn next weekend in a pivotol three-game series to help decide who will take home the regular season Ivy League title.
