Palfrey excelled at the plate and the mound to pick up the national award
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Columbia University senior Griffin Palfrey has been named the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week, the College Baseball Foundation announced Monday. The standout infielder and right-handed pitcher from Vancouver, British Columbia, was instrumental in leading the Lions to a perfect 4-0 week, highlighted by dominant performances both at the plate and on the mound.
At the plate, Palfrey went 6-for-14 (.429) with nine RBIs, eight runs, three walks, two home runs, and a stolen base. His standout game came in Columbia's 18-7 midweek win over Fairfield, where he went 4-for-5, driving in eight runs and scoring three times. He launched two three-run homers in the contest.
On the mound, Palfrey made two appearances, tossing two scoreless innings and earning a win. He allowed just three hits and struck out four batters, including a dominant inning of relief to close out the Fairfield game with three strikeouts.
The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, named after the former Washington State star and National College Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, is presented annually to the nation's top combo pitcher-position player. Last week, Palfrey was named to the watch list for the end-of-year award.
