Elise Hiemstra provides a spark off the bench
PRINCETON, N.J. – A slow start plagued the Columbia volleyball team as it fell in three to host Princeton 3-0, 25-13, 25-13, 25-21 Friday evening at Dillon Gymnasium.
Columbia (6-5, 0-2 Ivy) hit .127 on the evening, tallying 25 kills on 71 swings with 16 errors. Elise Hiemstra was sensational off the bench for the Lions, finishing with nine kills on 17 swings in two sets. Delaney Seaman also had a strong evening, finishing with a team-high seven digs and seven assists. Charlotte Gravlee had five kills on eight swings.
Princeton (4-6, 2-0 Ivy) hit .346 as a team, with two Tigers hitting over .525. Shelby Burriss tallied a match-high 10 digs on 17 swings. Ashtyn Sims had seven kills on 12 swings without an error; she also had a match-high 11 digs.
Lions unforced errors plagued them from the start. Princeton took an 8-1 lead in the opening set, needing just three kills before Columbia had to call a timeout. The Lions finished the frame, hitting .000 with six kills on 21 swings with six errors. Columbia also had four service errors. Jozie Zynczcak and Danica Nordlicht provided the bulk of the attack. Zynczcak smashed two kills on two swings; Nordlicht added a kill. The Tigers countered by hitting .348. Burriss had four kills on four swings to lead Princeton.
In the second set, Hiemstra tied it up early at 4-4 with the second of her two kills. But the Tigers responded, went on a 4-0 run, and forced a Columbia timeout to take an 8-4 lead. The Lions battled, playing strong defense at the net, but the Tigers pulled away late and took the second set 25-13.
The Lions battled in the third. Columbia and the Tigers were knotted up 6-6 following a kill by Hiemstra, her third of the set. Trailing 13-10, the Lions notched back-to-back points to cut the deficit to one, but that was as close as they would get. Leading 15-13 at the media timeout, the Tigers pushed their advantage to five on a Columbia attack error. The Lions kept it close, but Princeton ended the set and the match on a kill by Sims.
Columbia returns to action tomorrow evening when they take on Penn in Philadelphia. First serve between the Lions and Quakers is scheduled for 5 p.m.
