Volleyball Falls in Three to Cornell on the Road

Lions battle but cannot slow down Big Red’s attack
ITHACA, N.Y. — Columbia volleyball dropped its Ivy League opener, falling to host Cornell 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at the Newman Arena.
The Lions (6-4, 0-1 Ivy League) were led offensively by Elena Maynulet, who recorded 14 kills on .355 hitting. Columbia finished with 33 kills and a .168 attack percentage.
Cornell (5-5, 1-0 Ivy League) hit .412 for the match and had two players with at least 11 kills, led by Mackenzie Parsons with 14. Ava Bogan chipped in 11.
In the opening set, Cornell took an early lead before Columbia cut it to 7-8. The Big Red then used a 4-0 run to extend the advantage to 13-7. Columbia cut the deficit to 17-14, but Cornell scored four of the next five points and closed the set on a kill from Rio to win 25-18.
The second set followed a similar script. Columbia fell behind 3-0 to start the second set but battled back to tie the score at 4-4 and again at 8-8. Cornell gradually built its lead, taking a 15-11 advantage before Columbia closed within 15-13. The Big Red responded with a 6-1 stretch and finished the set, 25-18.
Cornell opened the third set with a 3-0 lead, but Columbia answered with a pair of kills from Parsons to tie the score at 3-3. The teams remained within a point through 9-9 before Cornell scored four straight to take a 13-9 lead. Columbia later trimmed the margin to 17-12 and 22-17, but Cornell closed out the match, 25-19.
UP NEXT
The Lions return to action next Friday when they travel to Princeton, N.J., to take on the Tigers. First serve between Columbia and Princeton is scheduled for 6 p.m.
