NEW YORK -- For the first time in program history, a Columbia University women's soccer student-athlete has earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors. Senior standout Sophie Reiser became the first Lion to earn the distinction by capturing third-team honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Tuesday.
Adding to her long list of career accomplishments, Reiser was recognized following a season which saw her share the team lead in points (18) and assists (4), and rank second in goals (7). The co-captain was named to the All-Ivy League first team for the third consecutive season, becoming the first Lion to earn top conference recognition three years in a row. In addition, Reiser was named the Ivy League Player of the Year as a junior after shattering her career high with 12 goals and adding 11 assists.
Along with fellow seniors Meggie Ford, Christina Eckhardt and Ashley Mistele, Reiser and her teammates won more Ivy League matches than any other senior class in program history, and were integral parts of Columbia's first Ivy League championship as first-years in 2006. For her career, Reiser ranks first on the all-time career assists list, second in career points and third in career goals scored. She currently maintains a 3.67 GPA and is scheduled to graduate with a degree in political science in May 2010.
The award is the second scholastic All-America honor that Reiser has earned, as last season she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America first team.
