PHILADELPHIA - The Columbia softball team dropped two one-run games to Penn in the final doubleheader of the season. The Quakers took game one, 3-2, before a 9-8 victory in the second game. With the pair of losses, the Lions finish the season 16-28 overall, and 7-13 in the Ivy League.
In the first game, Columbia got one run across in the top of the third inning, giving a lead to pitcher Tonia Wu. The Lions led 2-0 into the bottom of the fifth, before Penn scored twice in the inning to tie the game.
Wu gave up a home run in the sixth, as Penn took a 3-2 lead. Kayla Maloney came in from there, getting the final three outs. Columbia was unable to get anything across in the last at-bat, falling by the same score.
Madison Gott knocked her fifth home run out of the park for her lone hit of the game. Shelby Unger, Alix Cook and Kerry Cook all added one hit each.
Game two was an offensive explosion for both teams, as Penn walked away with a comeback 9-8 victory. Columbia went up 7-2 after a six-run third inning, giving a big lead to pitcher Tessa Kroll.
Penn would fight back with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to go up by a 9-7 margin. The Lions would add one in the top of the seventh, but it would not be enough, as Penn would complete the sweep with the 9-8 win.
Unger led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs. Taylor Troutt went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI.
