Mads Lawson takes a no-hit bid into the sixth, finishes with a 2-hit complete game shutout
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia softball team improves to 3-0 in the opening round of the Ivy League Tournament, after defeating No. 2 seed Harvard 7-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Cynthia Lynn Paul '94.
Columbia (21-21) got contributions throughout the lineup, finishing the day with seven runs on 11 hits. Juju O'Brien continues to obliterate the ball, going 2-for-2 with her ninth home run of the season. Alicia Marzouca went 3-for-4 with an RBI. It was her seventh multi-hit game of the season. Savanna Messner clubbed her 10th home run of the year, all in support of Mads Lawson (14-7) who tossed her 18th complete game of the year.
Lawson picked up where the regular season ended; she took a no-hit bid into the sixth and finished the afternoon with a 2-hit complete game shutout. It is her fifth shutout of the year. She also struck out three and walked three.
Harvard (21-22-1) got hits from Audrey Szollisi and Alexa Muller. Szollisi notched the first hit of the day for the Crimson, a leadoff bunt single in the bottom of the sixth that ended Lawson's bid for a no-hitter.
Taking the loss for Harvard was starter Nicolette Hunter (8-9). Hunter lasted just 2.0 innings, surrendering three hits and two runs with a pair of strikeouts. She gave way to Ryan Grace, who surrendered five runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings.
Columbia wasted little time jumping out to an early lead. In the top of the first, Eleni Katisvalis led off the game with a base hit through the right side. She moved to second on the sacrifice bunt from Caylene Nguyen.
With two down, back-to-back base hits from O'Brien and Marouzca got the Lions on the board. O'Brien slapped a double down the left field line, and Marzouca shortened up with a base hit back up the middle.
Two innings later, O'Brien struck again, going the opposite way for a 2-run blast. It was her ninth of the year and fifth in the last five games.
Messner followed with a solo home run in the fourth. Hubble added RBIs in the fifth and seventh with a sac fly and a double.
Columbia will face Princeton at 10 a.m. Tomorrow. The top-seeded Tigers defeated No. 4 seed Brown, 7-5, in the tournament opener.
Harvard will take on Brown tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face the loser of Lions vs. Princeton.
