Columbia has its chances early
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia softball team's season came to an end on a wet Saturday afternoon at Cynthia Lynn Paul '94 Field, falling to top-seed and tournament host Princeton 8-0 in five innings.
Columbia (22-23) finished with four hits, two coming in the top of the first. Princeton (33-13) tallied eight runs on 10 hits. A five-run fourth inning proved to be the difference.
The win went to Cassidy Shaw (16-3), the loss went to Mads Lawson (15-9).
Columbia had its chances early against Shaw but could not scratch a run across. In the top of the first, Nguyen led off with a base hit the opposite way, and she moved over to third on the double down the right field line from Sarah Mikami.
After the two teams traded zeros in the first, a 30-minute rain delay halted the top of the second. Out of the break, the two sides resumed their pitcher's duel.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers broke through, scoring five runs on five hits. The big one was a 2-run double down the right field line from Abby Horberger. An RBI triple from Julieta Roa ended the day for Lawson.
Lawson's final line for the game: 3.2 innings pitched, five runs allowed on six hits. She struck out three. Four of the six hits she surrendered came with 2-strikes on the board.
Princeton ended it with three runs in the fifth, a single through the right side from Jessica Phelps scored the winning run.
After surrendering hits to Mikami and Nguyen in the first, Shawn pitched around hits to Eleni Katsivalis and Savanna Messner. Shaw's final line: 5.0 innings pitched, four hits, no runs, with a walk and three strikeouts.
Saturday was the final game in the careers of seniors Georgia Corey, Charlotte Laidler, Savanna Messner, Eleni Katsivalis, and Sarah Mikami. These five finish their careers with 79 wins and three postseason appearances.
After starting the year 0-10, the Lions finished 22-13. It is the fifth 20-win season in head coach Jennifer Teague's 10 full seasons. Columbia finished tied for third in the Ivy League with a 12-6 mark.
