Mads Lawson goes the distance, striking out 10
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia softball team staved off elimination and will face top-seed Princeton on Saturday following a thrilling 2-1 win over fourth-seed Brown in the elimination game at the Cynthia Paul '94 Field.
Columbia (22-22) went 1-1 on the day. They began the afternoon falling to Princeton 6-1 in the winners' bracket before coming back to eliminate the Browns in the nightcap. For the day, the Lions scored three runs on 13 hits; they did not leave the yard but got doubles from Savanna Messner, Juju O'Brient, and Eleni Katsivalis. Sophomore Alicia Marzouca led Columbia with two against the Bears.
In the circle, Mads Lawson (15-8) was a bulldog, going the distance in the win over Brown. She recorded her 149th strikeout of the season against the Bears, which moved her into second place all-time in a single season in program history.
GAME ONE RECAP
Friday began with the Tigers (32-13) recording three-straight hits, including back-to-back doubles, giving Princeton an early 1-0 lead. But with no outs and runners at the corners, O'Brien fielded a ball at short and threw out the lead runner at home to get the game's first out. Lawson settled down, striking out the next two batters to hold the Tigers to the lone run.
In the bottom of the third, Kyra Mason notched the Lions' first hit with a shallow pop-up just out of reach of the second baseman. She came around to score all the way from first on the opposite field, a double from Katsivalis.
In the top of the fifth, the Tigers struck again. Maddie Ratcheson led off with a single through the right side. She came around to score on the single to left field from Graciela Dominguez. Lawson regrouped and retired the next two batters to end the threat.
With two outs in the sixth, Dominguez struck again with a 2-run single to right field to bust the game open, giving Princeton a 5-1 lead. They added another run on a wild pitch before Lawson got the final out.
In the home half, Brielle Wright entered the game. After a quick 1-2-3 sixth, she ran into some trouble in the seventh, hitting two batters and surrendering a single. But she got out of the threat to end the game.
The win went to starter Cassidy Shaw (15-3), who tossed five complete. She scattered three hits and a run, while striking out five.
Lawson took the loss; she fell to 14-8 after surrendering 10 hits, five earned runs. She struck out five.
GAME TWO RECAP
Lawson showed no signs of fatigue early, retiring the first nine batters she faced - six via a strikeout. Lawson struck out the side in the third.
In the top of the fourth, the Bears (21-24) broke through. With two outs and two on, Lily Burns poked a ball the other way just out of reach of Marzouca that plated a run.
The two pitchers traded zeroes from the fifth through the 11th. In the seventh, Mikamii made the defensive play of the game, laying out for a hard hit ball down the first base line for a putout that stranded a runner at third.
Columbia had their chances to put the game away, but the Bears were able to get out of the jam each time. Finally, in the bottom of the 12th, Columbia scratched the winning run across. Mikami started the rally with a single to left field. She moved into scoring position on the O'Brien base hit to center field. The two moved up 60 feet on an infield single from Marzouca.
With the bags full, Edie Cobb (6-12) could not find the strike zone and issued a free pass to Tatum Hubble on four pitches to score the winning run.
Cobb tossed a career-best 11.1 innings, allowing nine hits, two runs, nine walks and five strikeouts.
Lawson countered, scattering four hits, a run with two walks and 12 strikeouts over her full 12 innings of work. It is the third time this season Lawson has struck out 10 or more.
The Lions return to action tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m when they take on Princeton in the Championship Bracket. The Lions need two wins to win the Ivy Tournament and clinch the program's first regional berth.
