Columbia’s offense scores early and often in series-clinching win over Quakers
The win over the Quakers (17-24, 8-10 Ivy) sees Columbia improve to 19-19 on the year and 11-7 in Ivy League play. The 11 conference wins are tied for the third most in program history. It also clinched a winning season in conference play for the fifth time in Head Coach Jennifer Teague's tenure. The Lions have previously never finished above .500 in conference play prior to her arrival.
With Lawson on the mound, the Lions broke through in the top of the second inning. Payton Shimansky sent a ball the other way for a two-out triple - the first of three times she reached safely on the day. Savanna Messner knocked her in with a single to left field.
In the top of the third, Juju O'Brien belted a ball deep to center field for her fifth home run of the season. The two-run cushion was more than enough for Lawson, but the Lions were not finished.
Columbia scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth and put the game away with a six-run sixth inning. Caylene Nguyen tripled in the fourth and doubled in the sixth to plate four of the Lions' 12 runs. Shimansky also had an RBI base hit.
Lawson went the distance, going six complete. It is her 17th complete game of the season, which is tied for the 10th most in a single season at Columbia. She also struck out eight, while holding the Quakers to one run on seven hits.
Lawson improves to 13-6 on the year. She has now won eight consecutive starts. The one run allowed extends her streak to 17 consecutive starts surrendering two or fewer runs.
The loss was charged to Sienna Acosta (3-5). She went 2.1 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, a walk and a strikeout.
Columbia returns to action next Saturday when they host Harvard for a doubleheader. Game one of the series is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., with game two to follow approximately 30 minutes later. Sunday will be Senior Day at Columbia.
