JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Will Savage went 3-for-3 and George Thanopoulos threw seven strong innings, but the Columbia baseball team fell, 2-0, at Jacksonville in its season opener Friday.
Thanopoulos took the decision despite not allowing a hit after the first inning and fanning five batters.
The Dolphins scored both runs in the bottom of the first. Parker Perez led things off with a single through the left side followed by a walk issued to Austin Hays. Sam Armstrong and Nick Koslowski notched RBI singles before Thanopoulos settled in.
The Lions' best opportunity came in the top of the eighth after Joe Engel and Saveage drew back-to-back walks with two outs. However, Engel was picked off to end the threat. A two-out double by Nick Maguire brought the tying run to the dish in the ninth, but Mike Cassala induced a ground out to end the game.
Zack Bahm worked a scoreless eighth inning of relief. Robb Paller saw his 36-game on-base streak end.
The Lions will continue its series with the Dolphins on Saturday, March 5, when they play a twinbill. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m.
