A second half equalizer led to a 1-1 draw at Army for the Columbia men’s soccer team on Friday night.
WEST POINT, N.Y. – A second half equalizer for the Lions led to a 1-1 draw at Army for the Columbia men's soccer team on Friday night.
With the tie, the Lions are now 1-1-1 on the season, with two off days before Binghamton visits in the home opener on Monday.
The home team got on the board early in the first, as Keenan O'Shea connected with Ibrahim Seye in the 18th minute in front of the net for the score. Columbia had their chances for an equalizer in the half, but a Danny Laranetto shot was saved, a John Denis attempt went wide, and Vana Markarian's header was also saved.
On a Columbia corner in the 63rd minute, Markarian made a run and connected a header inside the near post to even the score. Denis recorded the assist on the play, which was his first of the season.
Four minutes after the goal, Denis sent a cross on the right side that went all the way through to the back side, as Francisco Agrest beat Army keeper Justin Stoll to the ball on the left. The senior found his fellow co-captain Kynan Rocks in front of the net, but an Army defender came in for a defensive save, keeping it even.
Just moments later, defender Brendan Dennis got loose on a long run, going 1-on-1 from the right side with Stoll. Dennis put a powerful shot on frame, but Stoll was there for the save, resulting in a Columbia corner which ended up being knocked away.
The Lions had additional looks from Agrest, Laranetto, and Rocks, who's attempt with a minute and change remaining sailed just over the cross bar, but the match would find extra time as the score remained 1-1.
Army had the first look in the extra frame, when O'Shea sent a strike towards net from the 18, but Dylan Castanheira stretched to his right to knock the ball away for the save. That shot would be the only attempt on net in the first extra period, as the teams went to a second overtime.
Columbia had two attempts in the second overtime, one of which was blocked off the foot of Dennis, the other went high from Dylan Mott, as the Lions and Black Knights ended the 110 minute contest tied, 1-1.
The Lions had more attempts on goal, leading the Black Knights 8-2, while Castanheira ended the match with the one big save in the extra frame.
Columbia is back in action on Monday, Sept. 10 with a 7:30 p.m. match against Binghamton in the home opener.
