Big Green erupt for three second-half goals and blank Lions
HANOVER, N.H. — The Columbia men's soccer team held strong through a scoreless first half, but Dartmouth struck three times in the second half for a 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Burnham Field.
Columbia (4-3-4, 0-2-2 Ivy) registered three shots in a competitive opening frame. Early efforts on target from Henning Myrvang in the 22nd minute and Luke Zielinski in the 37th minute forced saves from Big Green keeper TJ Jeffreys. On the defensive end, sophomore keeper Aris Taki made three first-half saves to keep Dartmouth (4-4-4, 2-1-1 Ivy) off the board and send the teams into the break tied 0-0.
The match began to unravel for Columbia shortly after the restart. In the 48th minute, Dartmouth broke the deadlock as Bo Robbins got loose down the right side and drove the ball all the way near the six-yard box. Taki was left with no choice but to commit to Robbins, who then played the ball toward the center of the box for an open Morias.
The Lions looked to push back and had an opportunity to level it up in the 57th minute. Stepan Kapranov played a ball into the right side of the box that was sent dangerously across the face of goal. After pinballing around, Joshua Sosa slammed a shot from in close, but Jeffreys was in position to get his body in the way and keep the hosts in front. Minutes later, in the aftermath of a Columbia free-kick opportunity, Peter Chang was played into the box and sent a shot just high and wide.
The Big Green doubled the lead in the 78th minute, with Trenton Blake setting up Noah Sams in close. Just over a minute later, Blake capitalized on a solo effort, getting in behind near midfield and chipping Taki to cap off a three-goal second half for Dartmouth.
Columbia managed four shots in the second period – including a late blocked attempt from Zielinski in the 81st minute – but was unable to break through Jeffreys, who completed a three-save shutout. Taki finished with five saves on 15 total shots faced for the Lions.
Columbia will look to bounce back when it returns home to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium to host Ivy League foe Yale on Saturday, October 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
