Columbia dominates second-half chances but fall short of equalizer
NEW YORK — The Columbia men's soccer team was defeated by Yale, 1-0, Saturday evening at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The game was televised live in the New York area on SNY.
Prior to the start of the match, Columbia honored the careers of its senior class. This year's class consists of Chad Baker, Jack McDaid, Joe McDaid, Rafa Romo, Jackson ten Oever, and undergraduate assistant coach Jay Sonthalia.
With the result, Columbia moves to 4-4-4 overall and 0-3-2 in Ivy League play. Meanwhile, Yale improved to 4-6-3 overall and 2-1-2 in conference action.
Columbia controlled periods of play in the opening frame and nearly took the lead in the 24th minute when Luke Zielinski put the ball in the net. The goal was ruled out on the field for offside and confirmed after the officials went to VAR to review.
Just three minutes later, Henning Myrvang found space in close and saw his shot saved, but the sequence was again negated by an offside flag. Andres Garcia provided another prime chance in the 33rd minute, curling a strike from just outside the top of the box that whistled narrowly over the crossbar.
Shortly after Columbia's push, Yale broke through to score the night's lone goal in the 34th minute. Sebi Roy launched the attack with a strike that Lions keeper Aris Taki saved. The deflection dribbled out to Ryder Mills, who crossed it back into the dangerous area in front. Roy's follow-up attempt was saved off the goal line by the Lions' defense, but the rebound fell right to Angelo Zhu, who converted from close range.
Yale maintained pressure over the next five minutes, forcing Taki into another key save to keep the margin at one heading into halftime.
Columbia's offense surged in the second frame, outshooting the Bulldogs 10-4 over the final 45 minutes. The Lions received an early second-half spark with the return of forward Ethan Heyward, who checked into the match after missing the previous month due to injury.
As time wound down, Columbia relentlessly created chances to level the match. In the 78th minute, Garcia ripped a powerful strike from just outside the 18-yard box, forcing Yale goalkeeper Joshua Linebaugh to leap and make a high-caliber save to tip the ball out of the top-left corner. Zielinski and Jack McDaid both registered dangerous late attempts, but Linebaugh stood tall to secure the shutout.
The Lions finished the contest with a 17-10 advantage in shots. Taki made three saves in goal for Columbia.
Columbia plays its final home game of the season this coming Tuesday, October 27, against Hofstra. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
