Offside call overturned upon video review to seal Ivy League point at home
NEW YORK — A late second-half goal from Luke Zielinski powered the Columbia men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against Brown on Tuesday night at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
The Lions (3-2-3, 0-1-0 Ivy) dominated key stretches of play and delivered a relentless attack down the stretch, outshooting the Bears 18-12 on the evening. Brown moved to 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-0 in Ivy League play.
Brown created early pressure in the opening minutes, forcing Columbia goalkeeper Aris Taki into action. Taki used a diving effort to turn away a strike from Carlo Brown in the fourth minute to keep the match scoreless.
Columbia's offense responded with a flurry of chances around the 15-minute mark, earning a series of corner kick opportunities. In the 25th minute, Jack McDaid sent a dangerous free kick look just wide of the left post. The Lions nearly broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Henning Myrvang leapt in the six-yard box for a header, but Brown goalkeeper Graham Kois tipped the attempt away just under the crossbar to send the game to halftime tied 0-0.
The second half brought instant drama, beginning with an early video review for a potential Columbia penalty inside the box that was ultimately ruled no penalty. Brown broke the scoreless tie in the 73rd minute after Will Case was whistled for a foul in the box. Video review confirmed the referee's decision and Mathias Hille stepped up for the penalty kick. Though Taki made a diving initial save, Hille pounced on the rebound and put it back in to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Columbia's offense surged late, pushing hard for an equalizer in the final 15 minutes with strong attempts from Zielinski and Myrvang.
The Lions leveled the match in the 84th minute. Joe McDaid sent a long ball from near midfield over the top of the defensive line. Zielinski met the ball and struck a brilliant one-timer into the far left corner of the net. The goal was initially ruled offside on the field, momentarily halting the celebration, but video review overturned the call to confirm Zielinski's first goal of the season and equalize at 1-1.
Taki finished the night with four saves in goal for the Lions, including his second-half penalty stoppage.
Columbia returns to action on Saturday, October 10, when the Lions host Princeton (6-2-3, 1-1-0 Ivy) back at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
