The first-year scored all three of her goals in a span of 5:19 to give the Lions a thrilling win in Hanover
HANOVER, N.H. – First-year Ellie Decker recorded a hat trick in a span of 5:19 to give the Columbia field hockey team a stunning 4-3 overtime victory at Dartmouth Saturday. The Lions (7-7, 3-2) trailed 3-1 with just over eight minutes left in regulation before Decker worked her magic.
Down by one in the fourth quarter, Columbia played with a sense of urgency and forced Isabella Santucci to make a trio of stops to keep her team in front. However, the Big Green (3-11, 0-5) countered in the 50th minute when they were awarded corner and then a penalty stroke and Myah Pease buried the chance to double the margin.
The Lions went on a two-player advantage after a pair of green cards were called on Dartmouth and Decker slid one home from the left doorstep off a pass from Jaimie McCormick to make it 3-2 in the 56th minute. Columbia pulled Alexa Conomikes for an extra attacker with 2:45 remaining in regulation and the Big Green controlled possession deep in the Lions defensive zone with time winding down.
Dartmouth turned the ball over on a restart with 14 seconds remaining and Kelsey Farkas sent a long clearing pass down to Jennifer Trieschman. Trieschman pushed the ball to Maartje Mulder, who dished off to Decker on her left and swept it in with just two seconds left on the clock.
In overtime, Columbia marched right down the field and McCormick found Decker again from her office on the left side of the cage. Decker's first attempt was broken up by Santucci, but she had space to settle the rebound and slap it into the open right side of the net.
The Lions led 1-0 at the half on Trieschman's sixth of the season in the 27th minute. Dartmouth answered with two in the third quarter, both off penalty corners, before the Lions' epic rally.
Decker becomes the first Columbia player to record a hat trick since Trieschman did so in 2017 against Holy Cross.
The Lions wrap up non-conference play Sunday, October 27 at New Hampshire. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on AETV.
