Lions Earn 1-1 Draw at Dartmouth

Senior forward Emily Koe scored her second goal of the season for the Lions

HANOVER, N.H. — Senior forward Emily Koe scored the opening goal in the 14th minute of action, and the Columbia women's soccer team played Dartmouth to a 1-1 draw at Burnham Field on Saturday.

"We had some good moments attacking and creating some chances and I thought in transition we sort of didn't kick the ball as well as we're capable of," said Columbia head coach Tracey Bartholomew. "I think we have to give Dartmouth credit. They came out and put a lot more pressure on us in different moments and took us out of rhythm a little bit."

It's the second-straight game in which Columbia has finished in a 1-1 draw after playing to the same result at Princeton a week ago. The Lions move to 8-3-3 overall with a 2-1-2 mark in Ivy League matches, while Dartmouth moves to 9-5-1, 0-4-1 Ivy.

In a back-and-forth game, the Lions came out quick with first-year forward Ally Clark firing off the first shot of the match just over a minute into the game. It was in the 14th minute when sophomore midfielder Jessica Schildkraut collected a loose ball in the midfield, sending it ahead to first-year forward Shira Cohen in the box. Cohen quickly pushed it to Koe just in front of the net, who put the ball in the lower left corner of the goal with one touch.

With the Lions maintaining a 1-0 lead through the halftime break, Dartmouth came out aggressive in the second half. The Big Green put up the equalizer in the 52nd minute when Hayley Soriano put the ball in the far side of the net from eight yards out past Columbia first-year goalkeeper Liz Matei.

The Lions continued to push towards goal in the second half, outshooting the Big Green, 5-4, in the period but none would break through forcing overtime.

"Once they tied the game back up, I felt that there was some great effort in terms of trying to get the go-ahead goal," added Bartholomew. "There was so much transition in the game. You're looking for that extra effort in those moments. Kids at 110 minutes are exhausted. So, you're hoping someone will break free and have a moment. Shira had a moment here and there. Emily went in and created some stuff. I felt like we were so close to getting in and around, we just couldn't find our way.

"There's moments for both teams back and forth. The team we have doesn't give up, so I knew we were going to try to fight 'til the end. I know our players are disappointed for sure."

Overall, Columbia had a slight 11-10 shot advantage in the outing, while both teams earned five corner kicks, two of which came in the overtime periods for the Lions.

The Lions return home for the final two regular season Ivy League matches, first facing off against Yale on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. before taking on Harvard on Nov. 9 for Senior Day.
