The victory came against a Dartmouth team that entered the night with a 7-1-2 record, ranked No. 4 in the East Region and riding a five-game winning streak. The Big Green had posted five consecutive shutouts and had not allowed a goal since Sept. 3 before the Lions struck twice on Saturday. Dartmouth also entered the match ranked sixth nationally in goals-against average.
The win also carried some added significance for the Lions, who avenged last season's 1-0 loss to Dartmouth in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals. The Big Green went on to capture the tournament championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament following that victory.
Columbia wasted little time getting on the board. Following a corner kick in the seventh minute, Avery Sarzana scored her first goal of the season to give the Lions an early 1-0 advantage. Columbia carried that lead into the locker room, with Samantha Mahoney making a save on Madison Rose late in the half to keep Dartmouth off the board.

The Lions struck again just over two minutes into the second half. Gabby Chan set up Maia Beltran for her first goal of the season, doubling Columbia's advantage to 2-0 in the 48th minute.
Dartmouth quickly increased the pressure and was awarded a penalty kick following a VAR review in the 52nd minute. Rose stepped to the spot with a chance to cut Columbia's lead in half, but Mahoney came up with a huge save to keep the Big Green off the board. The junior then turned away two more Dartmouth attempts over the next minute as the Lions weathered the Big Green's strongest push of the night.
Mahoney and the Columbia defense continued to hold firm from there. Dartmouth finished with 14 shots, including 10 in the second half, but Mahoney turned away all six attempts on goal to secure the clean sheet.
The Lions improved to 2-6-3 overall and 1-1 in Ivy League play, while Dartmouth moved to 7-2-2 and 1-1 in conference action.

Columbia remains home next Saturday to host Cornell at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. as the Lions will celebrate their 40th anniversary as a program.
