Beltran scores twice as Lions erase two-goal deficit for second straight week and secure their fourth consecutive Ivy League victory
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second consecutive week, Columbia women's soccer erased a two-goal deficit to earn a dramatic 3-2 victory, this time against Yale on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Maia Beltran scored twice to bring the Lions level before Gabby Chan delivered the game-winning goal in the 88th minute, extending Columbia's Ivy League winning streak to four matches.
The victory improved Columbia to 5-6-3 overall and 4-1 in Ivy League play, while Yale dropped to 5-9 overall and 0-5 in conference action. The Lions have now won four consecutive Ivy League contests and sit alone atop the Ivy League table, with Harvard and Dartmouth still to play this weekend.
Yale struck first in the 17th minute when Eloise Stone scored off an assist from Alex Chang. Abigail Solomon doubled the Bulldogs' advantage in the 25th minute, finishing a chance set up by Hope McMillin to give Yale an early 2-0 lead.
Columbia began its comeback just before halftime. Beltran converted a penalty kick in the 42nd minute, with her attempt nearly stopped by Yale goalkeeper Kyla Holmes before the ball trickled across the goal line to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Beltran struck again in the 74th minute, curling a corner kick toward goal that deflected off Holmes and narrowly crossed the line before a Bulldogs defender illegally cleared it away. Following a VAR review, the goal was confirmed, bringing Columbia level at 2-2.
With the match approaching its final minutes, Columbia completed another remarkable rally. Angel Akanyirige and Beltran combined to set up Chan, who scored with just 2:43 remaining in regulation to give the Lions their first lead of the afternoon.
Beltran, the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, finished with five points on two goals and an assist. The late winner marked the second consecutive Saturday that Columbia overcame a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 victory. Last weekend, Krystal Medina scored in the 89th minute to complete a comeback at Penn.
Columbia finished with an 11-10 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks. Katrina Chorzepa entered in goal at halftime and made two saves to earn the victory, while Samantha Mahoney recorded two saves in the opening half.
Columbia returns home Saturday, October 31, to host Princeton at 6 p.m. The Lions will celebrate Senior Day and Halloween in their final regular-season home match.
