Javers tallies goal and assist, Mahoney records another shutout as Lions earn second straight Ivy win
NEW YORK – Columbia women's soccer celebrated its 40th anniversary in style Saturday afternoon, defeating Cornell, 3-0, at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The Lions scored three second-half goals to secure their second consecutive Ivy League victory and shutout.
"I'm so proud of this team," head coach Tracey Bartholomew said. "We've been putting in the extra work, and they've taken it all in. They've shown up and given their best effort, and to see them get rewarded with a result like this is just fantastic."
The victory improved Columbia to 3-6-3 overall and 2-1 in Ivy League play, while Cornell dropped to 4-5-2 and 1-2 in conference action.

The two sides played a scoreless opening 45 minutes, with Cornell generating six shots and forcing Samantha Mahoney into five saves. Columbia created several opportunities of its own, including a shot on goal from Maia Beltran in the 41st minute, but neither team could break through before halftime.
The Lions broke through in the 54th minute when Gabby Chan set up Evelyn Javers for a scoring opportunity. Cornell goalkeeper Sofia Kerrigan stopped Javers' initial attempt, but the sophomore followed up her own rebound and scored her second goal of the season to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.
Columbia doubled its advantage less than 10 minutes later when Chan scored her second goal of the season in the 63rd minute, with Javers returning the favor by providing the assist. The sophomore finished with three points on the afternoon, recording a goal and an assist to lead the Lions offensively.
"We've really worked on our connection, both on and off the field," Javers said of her partnership with Chan. "We work on our movement together every day in practice, and I think it's finally showing. I'm really proud of what we've built together, and it's the best feeling to be able to create goals for each other."
Krystal Medina put the finishing touches on the victory in the 80th minute, scoring her first goal of the season off an assist from Alexa Lee to extend Columbia's lead to 3-0.
Mahoney continued her strong play in goal, finishing with seven saves, including an incredible diving save in the opening minutes of the second half, to earn her second consecutive shutout. The Lions outshot Cornell 9-4 in the second half and finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots overall.
"We know how good we are and how much talent we have on this team," Javers said. "It wasn't clicking early in the season, but we've continued to work hard every day. These last two games have really shown how we want to play and what we're capable of."
Saturday's victory came as Columbia celebrated the 40th anniversary of its women's soccer program, welcoming former players back to campus and recognizing alumnae during a special halftime ceremony. The Lions also continued to honor the memory of Rocco B. Commisso, wearing commemorative warm-up shirts prior to the match.
"To do this in front of our entire women's soccer family, wearing Rocco's name, means so much to me personally and to our program," Bartholomew said. "I'm so grateful for all the women who came back to celebrate with us this weekend. The legacy continues, and we always want to make them proud. I hope we did that today."
Columbia travels to Philadelphia next Saturday, Oct. 17, to take on Penn. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
