Mahoney records five-save shutout as Lions remain tied atop Ivy League standings entering final week
NEW YORK – Columbia women's soccer battled Princeton to a 0-0 draw Saturday evening at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, earning a point in the Ivy League standings on Senior Day.
Samantha Mahoney made five saves to record the shutout as Columbia moved to 5-6-4 overall and 4-1-1 in Ivy League play. Princeton moved to 7-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference action.
The result leaves Columbia tied with Brown atop the Ivy League standings with 13 points apiece entering the final week of the regular season. Dartmouth sits just behind with 12 points, followed by Princeton with 10 and Harvard with nine. With the championship race and Ivy League Tournament berths still undecided, everything remains in play heading into the final weekend.
Princeton applied pressure throughout the opening half, outshooting Columbia 8-1 and earning six corner kicks. Mahoney was up to the challenge, making four first-half saves to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
The Lions' best opportunity of the opening period came in the 24th minute when Gabby Chan put a shot on target, but Princeton goalkeeper Sydney Romano made the save to preserve the scoreless tie.
Mahoney continued her strong performance after halftime, making her fifth save in the 78th minute on an attempt from Julia Johnson. Princeton maintained a 14-2 advantage in shots and a 12-4 edge in corner kicks, but Columbia's defense held firm to secure the shutout.
Columbia generated a late opportunity in the 89th minute when Angel Akanyirige sent a shot wide following a corner kick, but neither side could break through before the final whistle.
Prior to the match, Columbia honored its four seniors, Sophia Ambrose, Katrina Chorzepa, Samantha Weiss and Maia Beltran, in a Senior Day ceremony recognizing their contributions to the program.
The draw extended Columbia's unbeaten streak to five matches, following four consecutive Ivy League victories.
Columbia closes out the regular season on Saturday, November 7, traveling to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to face Harvard at 6 p.m.
No team has clinched the Ivy League title or a tournament berth, setting up a pivotal final week of conference play.
