Kelsey Farkas posted her fifth of the season and Alexa Conomikes made seven saves, but the Lions fell to the Great Danes Sunday.
NEW YORK – Columbia field hockey played another tight game against a ranked opponent, but No. 21 UAlbany came away with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon at the Baker Athletics Complex. Junior Kelsey Farkas posted her fifth goal of the season and goalkeeper Alexa Conomikes did all she could to keep the Lions (5-5) in the game, stopping seven shots on the afternoon.
The Great Danes (9-3) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Katie MacCallum crashed towards the net and pushed a ball to a charging Elaina Burchel, who tapped in a shot past Conomikes.
Columbia, as it has done all season, controlled the possession game and drew even in the 20th minute. Off a quick restart, Brooke Gasser shuffled a centering pass to Farkas at the top of the circle. The junior stepped into a shot home to knot things up at 1-1.
UAlbany regained the advantage heading into the intermission off a corner. Kelsey McCrudden inserted to Julie Rodijk on the left wing, who buried her chance to put the Great Danes up heading into the intermission.
After the break, the Lions continued to push forward and drew a series of corners in the final moments of the third quarter. However, UAlbany was in good position each time to thwart the Columbia chances. The Lions' best opportunity to draw even came when they were awarded a penalty stroke with four seconds left in the period. Gasser stepped up to take the attempt, but goalkeeper Melissa Nealon made a diving stop moving to her left to keep her team in front.
In the 50th minute, UAlbany pushed the advantage to two when Carlie Pelletier drove down the right side and Baylee Burghardt found space from close-range. Burghardt quickly settled the ball and chipped it into the goal for her sixth of the year.
The Lions held a 16-13 overall advantage on shots and had six corners, compared to eight for the Great Danes. Gasser posted a game-high eight shots.
Next up for the Lions is an Ivy League matchup with No. 12 Princeton Saturday, October 12 at 1 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+.
