NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Columbia Women's Tennis team will enter this weekend's 2019 Women's Indoor Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship as the event's No. 2 seed and will open competition against host Yale on Friday at 5 p.m., the ECAC announced earlier this week. A complete tournament bracket is posted at this link.
The ECAC Tournament bracket features all eight Ivy League teams, Columbia will play one match apiece on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All matches will be played at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center with the Championship match taking place on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Defending Ivy League champion Princeton is the tournament's No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 Columbia, No. 3 Harvard, No. 4 Brown, No. 5 Dartmouth, No. 6 Penn, No. 7 Yale and No. 8 Cornell. The format for the tournament is elimination with a consolation round. All teams are guaranteed three matches. More information can be found at the ECAC's website at this link.
On Saturday, Columbia will play either the subsequent winner or loser of the Harvard-Penn match on Saturday. Depending on previous results, it will face one of four teams on Sunday: Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth and/or Cornell.
Columbia (2-1) enters the tournament on a two-match win streak after defeating both Rhode Island (7-0) and FIU (4-1). Using depth as its strength, the Lions have a variety of lineups they can use. In singles, four players have 10 or more wins including first-year Akanksha Bhan (11-3), first-year Yekaterina Alferova (10-7), sophomore Jennifer Kerr (10-7) and first-year Melissa Sakar (10-4), while sophomore Christie Wan (9-4) and senior Sarah Hu (9-4) both have nine wins. Senior Andrea Kevakian (6-3) will also play a key role.
In doubles, Columbia is anchored by the duo of Bhan and sophomore Paulina Ferrari (10-2) along with Wan and Kevakian (9-4).
Columbia is chasing its first ECAC Tournament Championship since it last won the title in 2016 when it defeated Yale, Dartmouth and Harvard in succession. It also won the title in 2014. Here is coverage of the 2016 ECAC title and here is coverage of 2014 ECAC title.
