Jordahl-Henry Wins HJ; Igbokwe Takes TJ In Final Day Of Ivy Indoor Heps
3/1/2020 7:23:00 PM | Track and Field
Columbia Track & Field's women finished fifth and the men finished seventh as Columbia placed 17 on the podium.
ITHACA, N.Y. – Individual titles from first-year Anna Jordahl-Henry (high jump) and senior Daniel Igbokwe (triple jump), along with 17 podium finishes helped Columbia Track & Field wrap up a solid performance at the Ivy League Indoor Track & Field Heps on the second and final day at Barton Hall in Ithaca, New York.
The Lion women finished with 64.66 points overall to come in fifth place and the men collected 40 points to come in seventh overall as Columbia not only racked up 17 podium finishes but had nine of those podium finishes sit inside the top three of each respective event.
"It was exciting to see a first-year [Anna Jordahl-Henry], in her first Heps, go out and get the win in the high jump and it was great to see Daniel [Igbokwe] start the day off with a win in the triple jump, and we were excited for Jack's [Pihlkar] win in the weight throw", said Director of Track & Field Daniel Ireland. "The goal since I got here has been to build up our field teams, and we are doing that, and if we are to win a team title in either the men or women's sides, it will take both the track and field teams to work together to get that done. I think this weekend we showed that we are taking the right steps to get to that goal."
Jordahl-Henry cleared a personal record height of 1.79m to take the high jump title, and she becomes the first first-year in program history to win the Indoor Heps high jump title and the first Lion since Monique Roberts finished off her three-peat in 2012. As for Igbokwe, he jumped a solid distance of 15.67m to win his second-straight Indoor Heps triple jump title.
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN'S EVENTS): Going neck and neck with Cornell's Marguerite Lorenzo, Jordahl-Henry needed her last attempt to clear 1.76m to raise the bar to 1.79m, and knowing how tough Lorenzo had been, the Big Red student-athlete had not missed an attempt up to that point, she focused her drive into the first attempt at 1.79m. On that attempt, the Lion first-year flew towards the bar and launched herself off the 1.79m height without getting close to the bar and an eruption ensued as she had known that she might have just won herself a title.
Lorenzo, having three attempts to clear the bar and move onto the 1.81m height, could not clear the height, missing all three attempts to give Jordahl-Henry her first Ivy League Heps title in the first time she has competed at the event. But Jordahl-Henry was not alone in having a solid performance, as junior Grace Campbell and first-year Tiffany Bautista each cleared 1.70m to tie for fourth giving Columbia three Lions on the podium for the high jump.
Columbia got solid top performances on the track as well, led by a pair of second-place finishes by senior Bianca Alonzo, who finished with a time of 2:53.18 in the 1,000-Meter Run and junior Allie Hays, who clocked a time of 16:29.83 in the 5,000-Meter Run. Not to be outdone, the Lions also locked up a pair of third place finishes as well, as a PR from Lauren Micham (8.38) in the 60-Meter Hurdles and a 4:49.17 from Katie Wasserman in the One-Mile Run put the Lions in top spots on the podium.
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN'S EVENTS): With each attempt in the triple jump, Igbokwe improved on his previous performance, allowing him to keep first place from start to finish, as he hit 15.25m; 15.43m; 15.60m and on his final attempt the Lion senior put a stamp on his Indoor Ivy League Heps dominance with a mark of 15.67m to take his second-straight Indoor Heps triple jump title. One Lion who had a solid day on the track was junior Jackson Storey, who would be a clutch performer in both the 800-Meter Run and the 4x800-Meter Relay.

In the triple jump, sophomore Kali Hatcher came out of the gate firing, jumping 12.95m on her first attempt to put her in first, a spot she would hold until the final jump. In that final jump Brown's Zion Lewis would nearly jump out of her shoes to hit a mark of 13.44m to snatch the title from Hatcher, as she would finish second. Joining Hatcher on the podium would be senior Maryam Hassan, as in her final Ivy League Indoor Heps performance, would set an indoor PR mark of 12.67m to finish fourth overall.Say 👋 to your @IvyLeague HJ Champion Anna Jordahl-Henry!! 👏👏👏

In the 800m, Storey ran a solid race, staying with Dartmouth's Tim Sepf as the only two to run sub 1:52 times as Storey finished second with a time of 1:51.67. But where Storey really showed his fortitude was in the 4x800m Relay, as he would run the final leg and down the stretch he ran down Yale's final runner, blowing past him in the final 50 meters to give Columbia a second-place finish with a time of 7:42.79.BACK-TO-BACK CHAMP!! 🏆🏆
