Lions look to build a winning streak Wednesday in Philadelphia
Editor's Note: Wednesday's game was moved to 5 p.m. ET from its original start time of 6 p.m. ET due to the threat of inclement weather.
NEW YORK — The Columbia women's soccer team (1-2-1) is getting set for a midweek matchup against La Salle (1-3-1) on Wednesday. Kickoff from McCarthy Stadium is set for 5 p.m. ET.
Wednesday's game will be available to watch on ESPN+. Live stats will be provided by GoExplorers.com.
Here are five things to know heading into the matchup:
#1 | FIRST WIN IN THE BOOKS
The Lions picked up their first victory of the 2021 season on Sunday, defeating Bucknell at home, 1-0, behind a ninth-minute goal by Nata Ramirez. The sophomore's goal was her second of the season and first at home. First-year Sophia Cavaliere was credited with her first collegiate assist. Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Paige Nurkin earned a clean sheet in her home debut, making six saves on a total of nine shots faced.
Yet again, Columbia bounced back from dropping its home opener to win in its second try at home. Last Thursday, the Lions opened the season with a tough 3-0 loss to No. 25 Hofstra. Sunday's victory over Bucknell marked the sixth consecutive occasion the Lions have recovered from dropping a home debut to win in their next home outing (2019, 2016, 2013, 2008 and 2005). Each of the last three such occasions home come in the Tracey Bartholomew head coaching era.
#3 | YOUTH MOVEMENT
Columbia's roster consists of 32 players, 21 of which did not have collegiate playing experience heading into the season. Despite that, the youth in Columbia's roster has been called upon to play a large role in the early going. In the season opener at St. John's (Aug. 27), eight of the starting 11 were players making their collegiate debuts. To this point in the season three of Columbia's four goals and three of the team's four assists have been tallied by rookies. Sophomore rookie Nata Ramirez leads the squad with two goals on the campaign. Meanwhile, all three rookie goalkeepers have seen action between the posts. Sophomore Paige Nurkin has started two of the four matches.
Three different Lions have landed on the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll so far this season. Those recipients are detailed below.
Week 1 (Sept. 1) | Nata Ramirez, Ally Clark
Week 2 (Sept. 7) | Nata Ramirez, Paige Nurkin
#5 | WEDNESDAY'S OPPONENT
La Salle (1-3-1) has had a challenging non-conference slate so far this season. The Explorers began the year on the road against No. 10 Penn State, falling 4-0, were defeated by a tough UConn team, 2-1, and most recently fell to No. 16 Rutgers on Sunday in Piscataway, 5-0. The team's lone win came in its only home game so far, defeating Colgate, 2-1, on August 29.
The Explorers have scored three goals this season and all three have come from different players – Emily Banashefski, Camaren Cox and Danielle Rooney. Their goalkeeping minutes are pretty evenly split between Michela Auguadro and Jordnn Stallard.
Columbia will be looking for its first victory over La Salle, but there won't be any familiar faces on either sideline. Wednesday will mark the first matchup between the two sides since 1992, with La Salle holding a 3-0-1 advantage all-time.
