NEW YORK -- The Columbia women's swim team claimed first in every event of Saturday's 172-108 victory over Ivy League rival Cornell. The meet, held at Percy Uris Natatorium, refrained from scoring and instead transitioned to an exhibition following the 13th event, the 500 yard freestyle.
The Columbia divers did not compete.
Columbia began the meet in formidable fashion taking the first and second spot in the 200 medley relay.
Aziza Ganihanova,
Yani Le,
Jazlynn Pak, and
Isabelle Arevalo touched the wall first in 1:46.07 followed by
Riley Pujadas,
Ashley Hu,
Anthea Wong, and
Emily MacDonald (1:46.34).
Allegra Walker claimed the first individual event of the day, conquering the grueling 1,000 yard free (10:21.70) 13 seconds ahead of teammate
Taylor Whang (10:34.78).
The Lions secured their first of six consecutive podium sweeps in the 200 freestyle. Led by winner
Olivia Jubin (1:50.89), Columbia swam for second (
Callie Breiter, 1:52.92), third (
Clare Larsen, 1:54.39), and fourth (
Tina Le, 1:55.61) within five seconds. Senior captain
Mary Pruden headlined the next sweep, winning the 100 backstroke in 55.83 followed by Ganihanova (56.14) and Pujadas (56.94).
Karen Liu paced the 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:04.65. Four seconds later, Hu (1:08.23),
Lindsay Rispoli (1:08.42), and Le (1:08.49) rapidly earned the second through fourth spots, respectively.
Allison Martin paced the next event, the 200 fly (2:01.42), followed by
Hannah Hailu (2:05.16) in second and
Jessica Peng in third (2:07.24).
Arevalo added an individual victory to her successful meet in the 50 free (23.52), a fraction of a second ahead of teammate MacDonald (23.91).
Georgia Young rounded out the podium finishes with a 24.04 race for third. Arevalo led the Lions in the 100 freestyle, collecting nine points in 51.12 followed by MacDonald (second, 52.01), and Young (third, 52.31).
Ganihanova added yet another win to her standout sophomore season, winning the 200 backstroke in 2:01.01. She was followed by Pujadas in 2:03.51. Teammates Hailu and Whang earned fourth and fifth place finishes (2:07.97, 2:08.75), respectively. In the following 200 breast, Walker (2:20.07) took first. Hu and Le finalized the podium sweep in second (2:25.23) and third (2:27.46).
In the final scoring event, the 500 free, Jubin contributed nine points of her own with a 5:00.77 first place finish. Eyre finished in second (5:01.84) followed by Breiter in third (5:07.62) and Larsen in fourth (5:10.51).
While the meet went unscored for the remaining events, Columbia effectively swept the podium in the final three events. Wong produced the fastest time in the 100 fly followed by
Emily Wang and Pak. Martin won the 200 IM fractions of a second ahead of Pruden, followed by Liu in third. Larsen, Young, Jubin, and Lin concluded the competition in the top spot of the 200 free relay. Ganihanova, Breiter, Pak, and Lin secured second followed by Wang, Eyre, Wong, and Le in third.
Columbia will cross the Hudson on Friday, Jan. 21 for an 11:00 A.M. start at Princeton.
